I run Mac OS mavericks and Garmin Express is not recognizing my Edge 500. The old Garmin connect website detects the device, so I suppose it is a problem with the software.
I have similar issues. Have contacted customer support and had no help. I cannot see the Edge 500 on the computer when plugged in so cannot open the folder to delete the xml file. I've uploaded Express, Communicator, and the new Connect and tried on numerous Macs. Some helpful advice would be appreciated.
I have just bought a Garmin Edge 500 and when I try to sync to Garmin Express I keep getting a message saying that there is a problem connecting to the Garmin servers and I should try again later. I also have the Forerunner 410 and there are no problems with this device.
(Do i need to perform an update for the Edge 500 first and if so how do i do this without syncing to my computer?)
The latest software version for the Edge 500 is 3.30. If your Edge is not running 3.30 then you can use the Garmin WebUpdater application to update the software.
If you continue to have troubles. Open the Garmin folder on the Edge and delete the GarminDevice.xml file then Eject/Disconnect it and power it off. Connect it to the Mac again and try to add it to Express.
Thanks for the suggestions. My device is/was running v3.30, so I tried deleting that file. When I tried to use Garmin Express though I got the same message as before.
Can you attach the GarminDevice.xml file to a reply? We can do some testing once we have it. Use the instructions in the FAQ: How do I manually upload data from USB devices to Garmin Connect? to upload your activities from the Edge.
Out of nowhere Express has stop reading my 500. Was fine until I tried uploading on Monday. I plug in, Express says it's synced but the workout doesn't show in Connect? It's running 3.30. I've tried deleting the GarminDevice.xml file but nothing?
Its possible the activity file is corrupt. Please use the instructions in the FAQ: How do I manually upload data from USB devices to Garmin Connect? to manually upload the file. Connect will display an error if the data is corrupt. Corrupt activities should be deleted from the device. If it uploads, create a couple 30 second test activities and see if they will sync through Express.
You could also re-enter your Garmin Connect credentials in Express.
Select the device from the device drop down menu
Click Device menu
Scroll down to the Garmin Connect Account section
Click Change Account
Re-enter your username and password
Click Sign in

Typically, when this happens the .XML file that Curt was talking about shows a software version that is more than 3 digits. This can typically be taken care of by performing a master reset on the device. If you would like to wait to do this until we can verify it by looking at the XML you will attach, it's understandable as a master reset will erase all user data on the device:
