I run Mac OS mavericks and Garmin Express is not recognizing my Edge 500. The old Garmin connect website detects the device, so I suppose it is a problem with the software.
I too cannot get my Mac to detect my Garmin Edge 500. It worked perfectly until Garmin express arrived. Very frustrating. I have tried everything on this thread to no avail. My Garmin has the latest software - so too my Mac.
The Edge is essentially the same thing as a USB Thumb Drive. When connected it will mount as a drive in Finder called "GARMIN". Be sure to avoid any external USB hubs or Keyboard USB ports when connecting the device. Try a different USB port and USB Data Transfer cable if possible. Connect the Edge with it turned off and note whether it powers on and shows the Garmin logo and Charging on the screen. Locate the mounted "GARMIN" drive in Finder under the Devices. If you find the "GARMIN" drive, use the instructions in the earlier post to delete the GarminDevice.xml file from the device.
Try the suggestions in this article even though the title may not describe your situation exactly.

I am sorry but I did not have any problem getting the link to open. Here is the entire link. You will need to copy and paste it into your web browsers address bar.

Why is my Edge 500 unable to power on and when connected to the computer it locks up?
Hi Curt - I'm also having trouble with Garmin Express and my Edge 500. When I open finder, I do not get a GARMIN folder opening up. The Edge lights up and charges and I checked my cable on other devices and it works fine.. So.. I'm not sure why the Garmin isn't being recognized. I just downloaded Garmin Express today and my mac software is up to date.
I have been having issues with Garmin Connect and Express since updating to "Modern". Forerunner 305 well forget it, Edge 500 will sync "most" workouts but for some reason it will stall on a workout and again forget it, it just will not load that workout. Sometimes when opening Express it tries to initiate install even though it is installed. Then says update required so I update but it still misses workouts on the upload. I can see the workout and so can express but it will "upload" for hours and never finish. I have seen others here say they are done with Garmin, I am trying to be patient, emailed Garmin twice now only to be told try updating, try reinstall, or my favourite, there is no issue!
Great devices but whoever at Garmin decided to modernize Connect should spend a few days reading these posts!
I am sorry for the troubles. It is possible that the one file that will not upload has some corrupt data in it. Use the instructions in the FAQ: How do I manually upload data from USB devices to Garmin Connect? If the workout file will not manually upload to Connect then it will have to be deleted.
hi, i have the same problem. Mac OS 10.9.4, Edge 500 Software version 3.3. Mac detects the device, I can delete the xml file and recreate it, express never recognizes it. Thanks for upsetting the apple cart, and doing it without testing!
Are you running the latest version of Express? Try the steps here http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={8a5f1480-ddf1-11e2-7dd9-000000000000}&kbName=garmin
