Garmin express is not detecting my edge 500

Hi

I run Mac OS mavericks and Garmin Express is not recognizing my Edge 500. The old Garmin connect website detects the device, so I suppose it is a problem with the software.
  • I have similar issues. Updated to Modern and can't open ANYTHING. All software seems up to date.
  • There are no known issues with the latest version of Garmin Express 3.1.3 recognizing a Edge 500 that is up to date 3.30 on a Mac 10.9.1. If the Edge mounts as a drive when connected to the Mac and Garmin Express does not detect it. Delete the GarminDevice.xml from the Garmin folder on the Edge. Empty the trash on the Mac and then eject and disconnect the Edge. Once disconnected, power cycle the device. Restart the Mac then try again.

Garmin Express is really just looking for the GarminDevice.xml file on the Edge when detecting device.

I too am having the same issue with my Edge 500. Garmin Express Fit will not recognize my device. I have to use the Classic Garmin Connect to download my data. I tried the recommended fix three times without any luck.

Same issue for me - Mac OSX 10.6.8 Edge 500
  • JSWAHLEITHNER - Garmin Express Fit will no longer be receiving updates and you should be using Garmin Express to detect your Edge and sync to Connect. Download Garmin Express here.

SCOTTMCOZ - Garmin Express support for Mac 10.6.8 and older has ended, so you will not be able to use Express from that computer to sync your data to Connect. However, it is possible that your Mac is eligible for a free upgrade to Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks) through the App Store. I would look into upgrading or using another computer that meets the system requirements for Express. You can also use the manual upload option through the Classic Garmin Connect on 10.6.8 while it is still available.

Thanks Garmin. I didn't know about Garmin Express. I installed it and had no problems adding my Edge 500 to my profile. Worked like a champ.
  • I too have an issue with getting Garmin Express to work, but also with Garmin Connect since the last firmware upgrade.

I am on Edge 500 software 3.30, Mac OSX 10.5.8 and the Garmin Express app recognises my device, initiates download of files, but then stalls and says "Could not sync this device, please try again". The interface also says that it failed to syncronise because "there was an error syncing with Garmin Connect".

If I try to use the Garmin Connect webpage it initiates reading activities from the Edge 500, but the download then hangs with about 1cm of blue bar to go...

similar unresolved issue w Garmin Express & Edge 500

    Relevant Specs:
    • 2010 Edge 500
    • Software version: 3.30
    • GPS: 2.60
    • System: Mac OS 10.8.5 (I will not be moving to 10.9.1 until finishing a work project later this summer, due to some known incompatibilities with that upgrade.)

The issue and behavior I'm seeing is as follows:
    • Garmin Express will not recognize my device unless I power cycle it. When I do that, Garmin Express provides a prompt that says, "Unsupported device detected. A different version of this application needs to be installed to update this device." I then click "Install."
    • The prompt then says, "Downloading Garmin Map Updater," and shows a status bar. Once the software update from Garmin Map Updater begins, I notice the Garmin device drive image appear on my desktop.
    • The next prompt screen says: "A Garmin GPS device was detected, but it does not support the updating of its built-in maps..." I have no other options from this prompt other than to exit it or click continue. When I click continue, the Garmin Map Updater quits unexpectedly.
    • When I attempt to restart Garmin Express or identify my device on it, the result is "No Device Found." But the device is still recognized by my computer and with the old Garmin Connect upload feature online.

With this result, currently my only option to upload or access my data is to keep using the old Garmin Connect that is being phased out. How can I resolve this issue?

Garmin Express support for Mac 10.5.8 and older has ended, so you will not be able to use Express from that computer to sync your data to Connect. I would look into upgrading or using another computer that meets the system requirements for Express. You can also use the manual upload option through the Classic Garmin Connect on 10.5.8 while it is still available.

The device is identified by a specific file on the Edge. The behavior you describe points to an issue with this file. Delete the device from Garmin Express then use the instructions to delete the GarminDevice.xml file from the device. The device will recreate a new file once it is disconnected and starts up. Add the device back to Express and see if the behavior changed.

    • Delete the device from Express from the Device menu
    • Connect the device to the Mac
    • Open the Garmin drive from Finder or the Desktop
    • Open the Garmin folder
    • Locate the GarminDevice.xml file and throw it in the Trash
    • Empty the Trash
    • Eject and disconnect the device
    • Allow the device to start up
