I installed Garmin Express today, and when trying to add my Edge 500, it finds it, displays the name as Edge 500 TWN, shows the serial number (the same as stamped into the back of the unit), but shows a message that says "The specified Unit ID is invalid." How am I supposed to upload rides to the new Connect if I can't connect my device?
Exact same problem. Initially couldn't get my FR 610 to recognize but after a couple reinstalls of Express it seems to be working OK. The Edge 500 behaves exactly as you describe...unit ID is invalid. Have you found a solution?
Will each of you send me the UnitID from the device.
Go to Settings, System then About menu. The UnitID should be on the About screen.
There are a couple tests I can do to determine if this is an issue with the compatibility database or an actual issue with Garmin Express connecting to the server from your end.
I have to say you guys are giving pretty good service. I had 5 different PMs from different customer service agents. I sent the GarminDevice.xml file to the email address as a couple of requested them.

Thank you for providing the information that we requested. I have been able to test your XML file and the device was able to be added to Express. If possible can you try using a different computer just to see if the Edge 500 can be added to Express.
In issues like this we have found that usually there is some 3rd party program or hardware on the computer blocking communication with the device. Please try disabling any security related software.
I have the same issue. No matter what computer I try it on. I have tried to connect my devices to three different computers using several different strategies. Here is what I have done so far.
Mac - I have disabled the ANT agent, installed GE. When GE starts up I get the get started screen. I click the get started button. I get the attached screen Windows 8.1 laptop - same process as the MAC. Windows 8.1 desktop - Completely removed ANT agent and all Garmin related programs. Reinstalled GE. I get the same screen as I did on the Mac.
At one point on the MAC and the Desktop it showed that my 910xt was connected via ANT but the screen was showing the same ? over the photo of the devices. Like the image in the attached image above. On the MAC it would show I was not up to date on my 910xt even though I was on 3.0. When I would say update it would just lock up. On the Windows 8.1 desktop it showed I was up to date. I click the sync button and it would just spin. I uninstalled GE and tried it all again. However now I also did a hard reset on both my 910xt and Edge 510. I also deleted the XML file from the Edge 510. Now it just tells me my devices are not compatible just like the screen shot attached above.
At this point I don't know what other options there are to try. Any help would be nice.
I have the same problem. When installing Garmin Express, the ANT+ agent was removed from my system (Mac OS X). Then, when pairing, it says that the unit ID is invalid. I have Forerunner 310XT Software Version: 4.5 Unit ID: 3846******
Please help me, I am now unable to upload any of activities from 310XT!
I am also having this problem. New Garmin edge 500 and I can't register it. It says the product serial number is invalid. Is this the same as the unit ID?
The UnitID and serial are different. On the Edge go to Settings then About menu to get the UnitID. You could also register the device using the instructions in the FAQ How do I register my Garmin device?. I can get the information I need from your account as well.
