Garmin Express - deleting activities and losing them? 910XT

Good to see that GC will now send settings to Garmin Express. Thanks guys.

However, twice now with the option to delete after upload checked, I have lost the activity. It happened with a pool swim so I unchecked the box to delete after upload in order to keep the activities on the device. Since then, all had been well. Feeling confident, I unchecked the box to allow GE to delete after upload. First activity, a bike ride, and it was apparently uploaded, but disappeared into the ether. All software is at the latest version running on a Mac with OS X Mavericks and all updates applied.

Process to failure was the same:

Upload apparently happened - GE said so - but the activity was still on the device and all good.
Selected 'Transfer All' on the device to force the upload and away it went.
On looking, there was nothing on Garmin Connect; there is a 1kb file in the FIT_TYPE_4 folder with the correct data and time; SportTracks tells me that the data is not complete (reads the .fit file), and the activity has been deleted from the device.

Today's problem may or may not be related to the latest version of GE, but given that the problem spans a couple of versions I suspect no.

And one question. Why was it necessary to change the folder name for the device with this latest update?

For now, I'm back to keeping the activities on the device after upload.

Apart from that, I am happy enough with GE and now that GC can send to my device as well, I see no reason to go back to ANT Agent. I might, however, just leave my wife's setup with ANT Agent for a little longer!

It sounds like this activity was corrupt on the watch which is why it will not upload to Garmin Connect. Do you mind posting the FIT file that would not upload so that I can take a look?

  • What's the point? The file has been corrupted by the failed upload process, but you will tell me that the file was corrupt in the first place! In words of few syllables:

Box checked to delete after upload = activity deleted from device, no upload to GC, corrupted file in the FIT_TYPE_4 folder

Box unchecked = activity left on device, upload to GC, good file in FIT_TYPE_4 folder.

    But I'll humour you.

File 281 is the file that was corrupted by the upload process - box checked.
File 282 is the next run that went up fine - box unchecked.

And perhaps you may want to look at the first post in this thread...

It looks like that file that won't upload is basically blank. That being said, we can test if it is broke on the device by attempting to upload with ANT agent. If it doesn't work, we know it's on the device and not an issue with the upload process.

As far as Express not deleting files from the watch when the option is selected, we are currently looking at this. I apologize for the inconvenience.

  • It's not on the device because it's deleted from the device. It is no more, dead, defunct, deceased and disappeared - think Monty Python's Norwegian Blue Parrot sketch here). Every activity since I unchecked the box (and every time I've tried this) has uploaded fine.
  • OK. Just updated to the latest GE v3.2.21.0 and the behaviour has slightly changed. Here goes:

    With the box checked:
    Failed upload - Unspecificed error
    Data deleted from device
    No file saved to computer

    With the box unchecked:
    All works fine
  • I have been testing the 3.2.21 update to see if the "Erase data on this device after successfully syncing" box is being enabled automatically and I cannot reproduce that behavior. Since noticing this post and the other thread I installed 3.2.19 paired a 310XT and a 910XT. Created several one minute test activities on both which synced successfully, then updated Express to 3.2.21. The Erase data from device box remained unchecked on each device. Though I cannot say why the box would be enabled without direct input from the user, I can say its is not due specifically to the 3.2.21 update.

PHILIPSHAMBROOK if those two files you were working with are still anywhere in the Express application folders or still exists as an activity on the watch I suggest you remove any trace of it. You might try the .FIT file repair resources online then see if it will upload to Connect.

  • Curt, please understand, I only have problems with uploads when the box is checked to delete after synching. The files are then damaged and/or disappear from view. Have no problems at any other time.

FWIW, yesterday I created an activity file sat at my computer. Checked the box to delete after synch. It failed. File disappeared form watch and, as noted above, not saved on my computer. Created another file in the same way and unchecked the box. It went through no problems.

It is not a problem with a file. It is a problem with the process.

And BTW, the box was not checked for me with the 910 after updating.
  • aha you are the culprit....

I read through this forum post. I searched for the files on my Mac (I have Yosemite installed) but I cannot find any files and they are no longer on my 310xt nor are they in GC, Strava or TP.

Does this mean that the file was deleted because GE felt it uploaded it and now it is nowhere to be found ever?
