Garmin Express - deleting activities and losing them? 910XT

Good to see that GC will now send settings to Garmin Express. Thanks guys.

However, twice now with the option to delete after upload checked, I have lost the activity. It happened with a pool swim so I unchecked the box to delete after upload in order to keep the activities on the device. Since then, all had been well. Feeling confident, I unchecked the box to allow GE to delete after upload. First activity, a bike ride, and it was apparently uploaded, but disappeared into the ether. All software is at the latest version running on a Mac with OS X Mavericks and all updates applied.

Process to failure was the same:

Upload apparently happened - GE said so - but the activity was still on the device and all good.
Selected 'Transfer All' on the device to force the upload and away it went.
On looking, there was nothing on Garmin Connect; there is a 1kb file in the FIT_TYPE_4 folder with the correct data and time; SportTracks tells me that the data is not complete (reads the .fit file), and the activity has been deleted from the device.

Today's problem may or may not be related to the latest version of GE, but given that the problem spans a couple of versions I suspect no.

And one question. Why was it necessary to change the folder name for the device with this latest update?

For now, I'm back to keeping the activities on the device after upload.

Apart from that, I am happy enough with GE and now that GC can send to my device as well, I see no reason to go back to ANT Agent. I might, however, just leave my wife's setup with ANT Agent for a little longer!
  • Hi Philip did you solve this? Just moved from ant agent to express on my mavericks mbp
first up load yesterday of a 5hr+ ride, disappeared into the ether, and was also deleted from the 310xt.

Rubi tracks reports as below, and those files (not in another forerunner 310xt folder,) are very short)
    No activities have been imported.
The data format in one or more of the imported files is unknown. These are the files that have not been imported:

    /Users/SteveK/Library/Application Support/Garmin/GarminConnect/-3749020032/Upload/FIT_TYPE_4/2014-07-20 12:59:44 +0000_2308.fit
    /Users/SteveK/Library/Application Support/Garmin/GarminConnect/-3749020032/Upload/FIT_TYPE_9/1989-12-31 00:00:00 +0000_65535.fit

    Thanks Steve
  • If the data was successfully uploaded to Garmin Connect it should still be stored on your Mac. See the FAQ: Why are my activities files not being stored on my computer once I have uploaded them to Garmin Connect using Garmin Express? What you may want to do is verify that the activity is in the appropriate folder on your Mac. If it is you can manually upload the data back into Garmin Connect. The only reason I can see why this would not be showing in your Garmin Connect account already is that it got uploaded to another account you created and the data is being displayed there.

  • Moving from the ANT Agent to Garmin Express without Removing the Device from ANT Agent manually can leave some left over files that can interfere with Syncing. Initial steps would be to delete the device from Express then clear out the ANT Agent Device data in : ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Devices/Unit ID of watch/. Throw the Unit ID folder in the Trash. Pair with Express again and Sync should resume.

Generally I recommend disabling Express's ability to delete the activity from the watch after a transfer. It sounds like the activity files weren't coming over from the watch in their entirety. A 5hr ride should be several hundred KB's in size. Another location to check for pending upload files is ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Garmin/Express/RegisteredDevices/Unit ID of watch/PendingSyncUploads/FIT_TYPE_4. FIT_TYPE_9 is fitness scale data if it applies. That file here can stay. If there are files in the FIT_TYPE_4 then the activity upload failed for some reason. Delete them and Empty Trash then Transfer All from the watch again.

In regards to the data on the watches, I suggest that you manually delete it once you confirm it is uploaded to Connect. That way if you have to use the Transfer All feature, the watch wont have a ton of activities to transfer.

  • "Moving from the ANT Agent to Garmin Express without Removing the Device from ANT Agent manually can leave some left over files that can interfere with Syncing."
Should that not be mentioned on install IN BIG LETTERS or in fact be done by the express installation programme when IT uninstalled the ant agent?

silly of me this is Garmin software.

    Hi,
    I'm Working with a 610.

Just tried doing this- I had a FIT_TYPE_9 that I uploaded from my watch after I removed the folder, and synched again. It's dated 1989-12-31 00/00/00, but should be my 3 hour run from today. I went to the classic version of GC, and tried to manually upload it, but was given the message " Some activities could not be created. View all activities."

    What's the next step?

The FIT_TYPE_9 is the file that contains the Tanita Health scale data if in fact you have one. That is not what you want and will create its self every time if deleted. Ignore it. All Activities go to the FIT_TYPE_4 folder. If you dont have this folder then the watch is not sending any Activities to Garmin Express. Make sure that you are holding the Lap/Reset button down on the watch at the end of each run. Once it counts back from 3 the Sync process will begin. Create a 30 second test run and let it Sync. Stay out of the Application Support folders until the Sync is complete.

  • But still no news, comment or email response about issues I've had concerning problems that arise when choosing to 'erase data on this device after successfully uploading'.

Granted I've not tried it since the last couple of updates, but then there is no indication that anything has been done either.
  • Already lost a couple of activities (multiple syncs) since moving to Garmin Express. That is clearly disappointing and feels like going backward compared to the Garmin Ant Agent (it has been a long long time since it lost anything for me).
On both occasions, I could see an overly small fit file in the FIT_TYPE_4 folder. The file is not accepted by Garmin Connect (invalid).

Now unticking the erase data from device after transfer option, but I'll need to remember regularly to delete the activities.

So many issues with Garmin recently, I've been a happy Forerunner 305, Forerunner 405 and Forerunner 910XT (with Ant Agent) user, but now I'm becoming a worried and disappointed user of 910XT+Express and Fenix (just back from battery replacement, could almost never use it in 18 months). I hope the wheel will turn again or i'll have to reconsider where to invest when I want a device tracking my marathon and trail races

Have same issue with my garmin swim. Haven't syncronized from end of the may. First of all I have installed ant+ transfer data, then appear some server error and but data transfered to pc, I saw the progress.
I have installed garmin express, but still no data transfered. I have deleted all .Fit +.trx files from my pc how it was suggested in this post. But it doesnt help, also I have tried to remove device from garmin express and syncronize it afterwards, (in this step I have also removed my previous device id folder before) it doesn't help as well.
Finally I have go to menu in my watches and find "transfer all" menu point, then I have syncronized my watches with garmin express again and voila, all data appear in my garmin connect.
  • Come on guys!

What gives? Somewhere in one of the recent updates the box to delete from device after upload was unchecked - I'd swear it wasn't me! I replaced the check in the box and have just lost an activity, a run. Same as before when first reported. A file in the folder that cannot be used, data deleted from the device, and nothing on Garmin Connect.

It's not really good enough guys. I don't want to have to remember to delete from my device before it gets full. Haven't trusted the auto-delete since the debacle with the 310.

About time you got this one fixed!

And there's me trotting around telling people that Garmin Express works! Time to wash some egg of my face methinks!
