Garmin Express - deleting activities and losing them? 910XT

Good to see that GC will now send settings to Garmin Express. Thanks guys.

However, twice now with the option to delete after upload checked, I have lost the activity. It happened with a pool swim so I unchecked the box to delete after upload in order to keep the activities on the device. Since then, all had been well. Feeling confident, I unchecked the box to allow GE to delete after upload. First activity, a bike ride, and it was apparently uploaded, but disappeared into the ether. All software is at the latest version running on a Mac with OS X Mavericks and all updates applied.

Process to failure was the same:

Upload apparently happened - GE said so - but the activity was still on the device and all good.
Selected 'Transfer All' on the device to force the upload and away it went.
On looking, there was nothing on Garmin Connect; there is a 1kb file in the FIT_TYPE_4 folder with the correct data and time; SportTracks tells me that the data is not complete (reads the .fit file), and the activity has been deleted from the device.

Today's problem may or may not be related to the latest version of GE, but given that the problem spans a couple of versions I suspect no.

And one question. Why was it necessary to change the folder name for the device with this latest update?

For now, I'm back to keeping the activities on the device after upload.

Apart from that, I am happy enough with GE and now that GC can send to my device as well, I see no reason to go back to ANT Agent. I might, however, just leave my wife's setup with ANT Agent for a little longer!
  • Sadly, that is very likely the case. Ensure you have the box to delete after successful synch unchecked.

I am told that the problem is with my device and recommended to send it in for a refurbished replacement! How's that for a joke? As I keep saying, like a broken record, the problems I have with uploads ONLY occur when I have the a check in the box to delete after a successful synch. Any other time, there are no problems.
  • So totally cheesed off with both my Gamin 910XT (I am on my 4th) and Garmin Express. Just had an awesome weekend of racing only to find that on transferring the data it says there has been an issue with the upload and now I have lost the data altogether. No upload and no data on the watch. Yet previous training stuff from earlier in the week is there! Go figure.
  • Sorry to hear you've been having problems with your 910. We've had our two nearly 3 years with few problems. We've had occasional problems with uploads but very few until recently. We are finding that if the box is checked to delete after successful synch the file disappears from the device, may not appear on the computer (if it does it's corrupted) and does not get uploaded.

There have been some reports of the box being 'magicly' checked so that might be worth investigating. If it is checked, uncheck it for future uploads. Sadly, you will likely have lost your most recent one.

    guys!
I'm getting mad… I'm a triathlete not an engineer or a software magician. I have a 910xt device. It doesn't transfer any data from about one week when I moved to GE… There that silly activity of Dec 1989 that blocks everything. I'm using a MAC I have delete the ANT agent… but it doesn't work! it starts transferring data and it never finishes Now the question is HOW DO YOU FIX THIS??

I suggest you try the suggestion in the FAQ: What troubleshooting options can I try when my ANT enabled fitness device will not upload data? Once you have it paired and added to your existing Connect account press the Mode-->History-->Transfer All menu on the watch. This will compare the activities on the watch to what is in Connect and send any missing activities.

    what a shame

Yesterday i used last version of garmin express (3.2.28 i think, last update available) with my 610: it was a pain!
    3 important question:

    1
It uploaded data into garmin connect but there is absolutely no activites saved in local folder (mac)!
    So what's the problem?

    2
There is no option to check for delete activites from device! Where it is supposed to be? I don't want to delete any activites from device! device delete older activites itself so why i have to delete while syncing?

    3
Garmin express told me to update sowtware on my 610 (new version 2.9.0) but after download into device a warning tells to disconnect device, reboot and connect again: what do you mean with "diconnect"? unplug and stick? turn off device? both?
In every cases after these operations garmin express doesn't reconnect with device and software update remain blocked! What i am supposed to do now?

    thank's a lot

See post #3 for where the files get saved on a successful sync. As far as the delete activities, that is no longer an option on the newest version of Express. As far as the "disconnect device..." message goes, this is a generic message that can include both ANT and physical connection devices. Just power off the device and power it back on to ensure that the update loads. If you continue to get errors contact support.

I can confirm and replicate: seems to be problems updating time zone database
Every time it goes into error

For many years I have been infuriated with my watch totally failing and deleting loads of my activities (I only sync every 10 days or so on average).

This comment is exactly correct and I cannot believe I have not noticed it before. Every time the timezone changes (mainly for DST) the watch totally corrupts its memory and no activities can be synchronised. Sometimes you get one successful sync before the corruption, but sometimes it just fails immediately I think.

How can we get Garmin to fix this as it would otherwise be a great watch for a bit longer?
