Garmin Express Crash on Mac

The newest update for Garmin Express for Mac does not work.  I'm on Mac OS Sequoia on a 2019 Mac.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it and it still goes into a crash loop when open.  When I open the application I keep getting the error message that the program quit unexpectedly.  When I hit "close" or reopen, the Garmin Express Startup banner remains displayed until I right click the icon to quit the program.   This has been doing this since I made the last update.  When I try to restart the program, it goes in the same loop.  Is there any way Garmin can push another update to fix this problem or any guidance on how I can get this to work again??

  • It even crashes on macOS Tahoe 26.0.1. As soon as my Edge 840 is connected via a proper USB-C 3.1 Cable it stops working (GE is freezing or hangs at start) GE has full disk access permissions. There is no other MTP open.

@Garmin What I am doing wrong?

  • Same issue here. It was not working on Sequoia and I've just updated to Tahoe 26.2 and reinstalled and the app is still stuck at startup. Another great software made by Garmin ... I was hoping to backup & reset my Fenix 7 which is crashing when saving activities (thanks Garmin) but it appears I won't be able to this either ...

  • The only way it works is that you have to reset the device (Reset Default Settings) and restore from backup as mentioned  on his Youtube channel. It worked for me - its a bit painful but hey Garmin Connect on Mac works now, so the problem is on the device - it's not related to the USB cable.

  • We recommend using this Support Center article for some troubleshooting steps to help with Express crashing on you: Garmin Express Quits Unexpectedly on a Mac

  • I tried this link, but the link no longer downloads Garmin Express. I see Express is not on the Apple Store anymore. Is it discontinued? I am unclear how to manage my multiple Garmin devices without Express.

  • You can download Express here: www.garmin.com/.../

  • Express repeatedly crashed when loading music files from my Apple Music folder.    Some files were protected so i thought that might be the reason.   So i deleted those files and re-downloaded from Apple Music (newer downloads don't have the protection anymore).    All songs loaded except a few which for some unknown reason could not be transferred... but at least did not crash.     I don't know if it was the unprotected files or all the other things I tried but finally was able to load the songs without crashing.

  • Since Apple is winding down the rosetta 2, Garmin really needs update Express to run natively on Macs with M-chip. Or make the watch software to do without Express. It's about time.

  • The end of Rosetta support was announced in 2020 so Garmin has had many years to re-write and test the code to run natively.

Garmin has to support software on computers (rather than phones/tablets) to allow large scale transfer of data such as music and maps, and to support non-Bluetooth legacy devices that pre-date Garmin Connect mobile e.g. ANT+ stick devices such as 310XT etc., and devices where you only connect with a cable such as the Etrex series.

Maybe the answer is to move this functionality into Garmin Connect web and retire express?

Although a problem with that is that they would have to write lots of new code which means introducing lots of new bugs and accidentally removing legacy support as a result.
