While using Garmin Express (version 7.27) to update maps on a DriveAssist 50 LMT, I was prompted to insert a microSD card to increase internal memory.
This was the first time I've ever been prompted to insert a memory card for my DriveAssist 50 to perform a map update.
There was already a 32 GB card inserted into the side slot, so I clicked "Continue" and got a "can't find memory card" message.
I wondered what the problem was. Windows 11 detected the DriveAssist 50 and showed both the internal memory and the memory card. According to a Garmin troubleshooting web document, I removed/reinserted the card, used a different USB cable, tried a different USB port on my computer, tried running Garmin Express as an administrator, and tried using a different computer. Still the same issue. I tried older versions of Garmin Express. No success. Downloaded and installed BaseCamp to update maps, but that didn't work either. I own several other, older Garmin auto GPS models, and have never had problems with updating maps after being prompted to add a memory card.
I was just about to give up and start shopping for a new GPS when I found this support web page.
The DriveAssist 50 features two memory card slots: one for the camera (located on the side, which is what Windows 11 was detecting) and one for expanding internal memory (located on the bottom). If I'd checked the owner's manual initially, I would have saved myself some time. All my other Garmin GPS models only have one slot.
After inserting a memory card into the bottom slot, Garmin Express successfully updated the DriveAssist 50 maps. And Windows 11 saw the internal memory, the memory card for the camera, and the new memory card for the maps.
