Garmin should start compile Garmin Express Mac for Apple Silicon

With MacOS 28 (in 2 Years) there will be no Rosetta 2 more for running Garmin Express on Apple Silicon Macs. So the Intel Version from Garmin Express will stop working.

Question, will Garmin be ready before?

  • Question, will Garmin be ready before?

If you ask me, the question is rather . Will YOU be ready ... when they say . Buy a Windows PC ?

  • I've not heard of this particular problem; however, my M2 macbook doesn't recognise my Nuvi-42 as an external file device so I can't use it now :-(

Fortunately, I have found a workaround of sorts which might work for you. I upgraded from an Intel macbook, so the old macbook was going spare.  I reconfigured it to be a network file server.  I can control it by using Screen Saving, it acts a reliable Time Machine server (saving onto a separate 1TB usb disc), and I can use it to update my Nuvi sat-nav, rip files from my CD drive (although my new M2 will also do that), and much more. When I reach the point that I have insufficient disc space on my new macbook, I'll offload some files onto the file server and free up some space.

Setting it up is fairly easy.  In Preferences, turn on Screen Sharing and File Sharing, set up which volumes you want to be shared over your local network, and that's it.  I also set up a start-up / shut-down schedule for the server, so it's powered off over night, and boots up at 7:55 every morning.

I haven't tried this, but you can also install Linux on an Intel macbook, and I believe that can also be set up a file sharing server. You'd need to talk someone who knows a lot more about Linux that I do to see it it's viable.
