Garmin Express (7.25.0.0) cannot find devices on my 15" M1 MBP (macOS Sequoia 15.3.2)

I've tried uninstalling&re-installing, manually wiped all files and preferences, tried using a dongle in case it was some weird thunderbolt issue.

One thing, the app NEVER asks for permission to read/write external devices.

It won't detect my Fenix 8, nor my wife's FR965.

Surely. I'm not the only one?

  • MacOS 15.3 has issues with certain devices, update to 15.4.1

  • Doesn't work for me either, on 15.4.1 trying to connect to an Edge 840

Can't believe this is still so hard...

  • Can you access the Edge with another program on your Mac?

  • Yes, openMTP recognises the Edge device consistently

  • Did you set "Enable auto device detection" in OpenMTP? Please unset it. Also do not run it when you start Garmin Express. On MacOS only one program can access the device at the same time, it wlll stay invisible for the others. My guess is that OpenMTP is blocking access for Express.

Also unset "Always keep Garmin Express running in the background" and "Automatically open Garmin Express when a Garmin device is connected" for the same reason.

  • I appreciate the help!

I would have written the same comment about things not having to be so hard even before I installed OpenMTB.

None of the automatic/background options are set.  Neither in OpenMTB nor in Garmin Express.

It appears possible to bypass Garmin Express completely for all functionality in one way or another, so that seems to be the best way to go for now.
