Can we be allowed to disable data transfer when connecting Nuvi57 to a computer/car?

I am trying to power my Nuvi57 from the USB sockets in my car in order to tidy up the cabling. However, the front USB sockets are also for data transfer so as soon as I plug the GPS in it goes into data transfer mode and won't allow navigation. I would like to be able to select NAV or Data mode when connecting to an intelligent device. Does anyone know if this is possible, if not can it be incorporated into an update?

The USB cable you are using has four wires for power and data. The small plug that goes into the nüvi has five pins. So one pin isn't connected to anything.

The plug on the power cable that came with your nüvi is different: that specific pin is connected through a resistor with a certain value to ground. The nüvi decides which mode to use based on the presence/absence of that resistor. What you need is a special cable with that resistor. I don't know where to get it, maybe DIY?

There are no automotive devices where you can set the connection mode, so they aren't going to add it with an update.

Thanks for that. I will scout around for a cable but am not too optimistic. The next options are the status quo or run a long cable from the non data usb sockets in the rear of the car.

Brilliant, well done and thank you. I am in the UK so will use the info from the store on your side of the pond to try to source one here and if that fails I know where to go.
