Can I delete a map file from my Garmin device?

If there was a forum category for MapInstall, I would have asked it there.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 66LMT (purchased 2015 or 2016). I am in the process of updating the North America City Navigator map. I don't have space to install all of North America on my Nuvi, I have used MapInstall to install a subset of the map to my Nuvi after downloading to my Macbook. My Nuvi storage shows as 3.74GB capacity, 414 MB available. I have successfully loaded a selection of maps from the 2025.2 version of the NA map. I would like to remove the 2024.1 version of the map. On MapInstall, it is greyed out, with a size of 1.45 GB.

I just updated to a new MacBook. I have gone back and forth from my new laptop to old to see if I can remove the old 2024.10 map. MapManager on my new device no longer shows me the old map. MapInstall shows it in the list of maps, but greyed out, with a filename of GMAPPROM.IMG. It is in a hidden .System folder on my Nuvi. Can I safely delete the GMAPPROM.IMG file? Is there a safe way to remove the 2024.10 map from my Nuvi??

  • Yes, provided the date doesn't correspond to the date when you installed the new map then it's safe to delete along with the corresponding .unl and .gma files. Note though that in the past some devices wouldn't boot without a gmapprom.img file. I don't believe this is true any longer, as I've seen no reports of this happening recently, but to be safe I'd move the new map you've installed, including the associated .unl and.gma files to the same location, renaming them all as gmapprom

  • Thanks for the info! I will try to just rename the file and see if it still powers up. I don't really need the space now, but would like to clean up any dead space on the device.
