Garmin Edge 1000 Maps have virtuall no information

Hi,

I have an Garmin Edge 1000 synced to Garmin Connect and Strava. When I look at the map on the Garmin there is very little information, so i tried a factory reset and this did not solve the issue.

Next I tried to connect the Garmin to Garmin Express to try and update the maps, however Garmin Express was unable to find the device. The Garmin 1000 did bleep when it was put into the computer and was charging.

I tried different ports on my windows 10 machine and different cables which had the same out come. I then tried a mac desktop and mac laptop with different cables and had the same results. I installed older versions of Garmin 1000 on my mac and again it didnt work.

I have attached photos of the maps,

Thanks for any help in advance Slight smile

  • This looks like the BaseMap. Do you have any detailed maps installed? If so which one and is it selected?

  • No I don't think I have any maps installed. And this is my main issue when I follow the procdeure to install maps;

To Download the Map Using Garmin Express:
    1. Connect the Edge to a personal computer.
    2. Launch Garmin Express. ...
    3. Select the desired device or select Add a Device and follow the on-screen prompts if the device isn't listed.

My garmin is not seen by the computer. I've read you can connect straight to the wifi but on the device it says go to the website and the website says plug it in the computer.

    Thanks

  • To download a map you need to purchase one unless you've somehow deleted one that came pre-installed? You should have a Garmin cycle map. Do you? If not did you buy this new or second hand?

You could try the steps here to see if you can get your Edge recognised

  • Thanks again Sussamb.

I don't have any maps on the device, maybe the factory reset removed them as this is all i have done to it. It is a second hand device.

Thanks for the link I followed those steps and have had no success unfortunately. It is very strange as it's not recognised in the devices and drives of none of my computers but it does charge. It does state in the link you sent me "ensure that the cable is a USB Data Cable and not a USB Charging Cable" I wonder if it is possible that all my cables are not USB data cables, even the one that came with the Garmin?

    Thanks again.

  • Factory resets don't remove maps, so if it's second hand I suspect the previous owner deleted the map. As far as I know all Garmin cables are data cables but if second hand it could be faulty so I'd try another data cable as that could be the issue.

  • Thanks. I'm looking for the right cable right now but I suspect it may be a moot point as I have found I have several maps installed. I have tried enabling and disabling them but the map does not looking any different. So the solution may not be I need to download maps but rather how to get the maps installed to work?

Thanks for you time Sussamb, I really do appriciate it Slight smile

  • OK, once enabled they should show if your Edge is actually showing the area covered by the selected map. If not you'll just see the Basemap.

  • I'm UK based, wiltshire and from what I can see the garmin cycle map EU should cover my area. So I guess the issue is the enabled maps are not displaying for some reason.

  • Try disabling all the other maps,  if still no joy use JaVaWa device manager to check the coverage

    www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

Device manager though may not work on your Mac

  • Thanks. The Micro USB (data cable) I purchased helped me successfully connect my garmin to my computer! So I must have had charging cables only.

I checked the maps on JaVaWa, and at least two of them covered my area. I backed up and removed all the maps.

I deleted the garmin device.xml and restarted the device to generate a new one.

I then installed them one by one. Restarting the device before checking each time and still it only shows the base map.

I checked for corrupt files and JaVaWa said no issues found.

Thanks again for all your help, I have learnt a lot so far, however i'm still unable to view anything but the base map.
