not enough memory to install maps or software update, and no way to "manage maps"

I'm trying to update my wife's Edge 1040 in Garmin Express for Mac. When I try to install the map updates, it says there's not enough memory and that I need to go to "manage maps." When I go there, it tells me I need to install a software update. However, when I try to install the update, it says there's not enough memory to install the update. I'm stuck in a loop. Any suggestions?

Does it maybe mean a software update on the computer?

You coudl try JaVaWa Device manager

that will show you maps you can delete and allow deletion

You may want to consider deleting any unnecessary data or maps on your Garmin device before trying to reinstall the software update.
