Garmin Express map update persistently fails for Edge 530 with different error messages

Over the last weeks I've been trying to download a map update - Routable cycle map of Australia and New Zealand 2022.20, but GE doesn't even start the download process. 

It's randomly one of two error messages; either 'There was an error installing the update' or 'We're having trouble communicating with our servers' and occasionally the 'Checking for updates' wheel spins for hours. 

My Edge (and Fenix watch for that matter) does sync and I've tried the usual (restarted computer and Edge, reset Edge, cleared upload history, reinstalled GE, removed Edge from Garmin account etc), but I can't install the map update. Any ideas?

I've got:

Edge 530 running the latest firmware 9.73

Garmin Express up to date version 7.15.0.0

Mac 10.15.7, no VPN etc

Wifi with 100+ Mbps
