how do I install the alpha update onto my garmin fenix 6 watch with my mac?

I am new to the Garmin beta program and have never downloaded an alpha file before onto the watch. I have the alpha file downloaded onto my mac but don't know how to load the file onto the watch. Any help would be appreciated.

Download Android File Transfer. Ensure Garmin Express is fully shutdown. Connect your watch. Open AFT. Follow the instructions in the alpha program forum

I tried that, but only get the message from AFT that "Could not connect to device"

This is key. Not running in the background. Shutdown. There are no changes to be made on the watch unless you have changed from the default USB Mode, should be on MTP.
