DriveSmart 61 Express: Latest Software does not fit (Maps)

The DriveSmart 61 Software ver is SoftwareVer: 6.70

With either a 32GB or 64GB micro SD card I can not update maps with Wifi or Garmin Express (7.13.2.0 on macOS 12.3.1)

With Express I get the error message: "The latest software does not fit on your device's internal memory. Please contact Product support for help with updating your software"

I email support but don't know how long that will take.

Need this for trip on June 12th!!! Please help!

Is there a way to load the maps manually

Thanks,

-karen

  • A 64gb card won't work unless you've reformatted it as by default it isn't FAT32 which your device requires. It should work with a 32gb card, if not try a different card. Only insert the card when asked to do so by Express unless Express has already used the card.

There is also this FAQ support.garmin.com/.../

  • I'm confused. I thought Express only downloaded the maps on teh computer for use with BaseCamp.

BTW my GPS did format the 64GB SD card, which this model can do

In any case it does not look like a problems with the GPS seeing the cards... when the GPS is connected to my Mac,  I can see some Garmin files on both SD Cards.

The last maps update I did was  a little less than year ago (have not needed the GPS for awhile). I think it put on the 32GB card because on it there is a file named  gmapprom.img which is 3.94GB , so I assume is map data.

Right before I tried to update the maps there was a GPS software update via Express ... i wonder if there may be a bug with that rather than with Express.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

  • Now I'm confused. I thought you were talking about updating your device but you say you thought Express only downloaded the maps for BC.  It doesn't and it updates your device too.

So what are you having a problem with?  If you have Garmin files on both card and device then that should mean Express has seen them.  If you want to update the map on your device then remove the card, run Express and see what happens, insert the card if asked.

If that doesn't work please post explaining what you're trying to do, where it failed and any error messages you got.

  • Device software updated fined fine. I could not install the maps update on teh device as Express says there is not enough internal memory on teh device (which IS just about full) though there is a working 32GB SD card with plenary pf space.

I posted the exact error message above.

In Expresss the option to download were to the device alone, the computer (pass sue for basecamp) or both.Donloading to the computer seemed to work but I did not where teh fit is or wha i is named or what to do with it...

So I just ASSUMED the download to the computer was for use with BASECAMP. If I can download to my computer and then manually move the map update to the SD CARD and have the device use it, it would solve my problem... but I have no idea if that can be done or how to do that.

    Thanks,

    -Karen

  • The download to the computer is for BaseCamp to use. You need to use Express though to install the map to your device as it installs far more than just the map.

The error message you posted was about software, not the map. As you indicate above the software has now updated  please confirm any error message now refers to the map?  If so I'd expect it to either ask for a card to be inserted or offer to install a smaller map region. Does it?  As I also suggested, remove the sd card and only insert it when Express asks for it.

  • "The error message you posted was about software, not the map."

But it looks like it was installed the first time... I guess you might know by the version Number of the DriveSmart software I posted.

Express says the update is a MAPS update not software... That leads me to think that error message is not exactly on point!... I see that kind of thing all the time in other software

"As you indicate above the software has now updated  please confirm any error message now refers to the map?"

I get the same error message

" If so I'd expect it to either ask for a card to be inserted or offer to install a smaller map region. Does it?"

    No.

"As I also suggested, remove the sd card and only insert it when Express asks for it."

I took out the card but and tried to update with express but got the same error as above. It never asked me to insert the card...

However when I restarted the GPS without the card, when the GPS powered up, it said it had to restart to load maps.

At this point I'm not sure if it using the version of maps I downloaded last year, or even older one stored in the internal memory.

In any case I'm going to put the card back in. With the card in it says my Maps are

    CN North America 2022.20 ALL

    CN North America 2022.20 Foursquare

    CN North America 2022.20 parkopedia

From what I find online the current maps are 2023

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks,

    -Karen

  • Well those certainly aren't the current maps. It's still difficult to understand what is happening from your posts. Let's take this slowly.

Please run Express again. Are you only offered a map update or are you still being offered software updates? If the latter do not select install all. Instead select only the software updates and install them. Having done so disconnect your device and reboot it. Then switch it off and reconnect it to your Mac.

At this point, and also if you weren't offered software updates as outlined in my second paragraph above, how much free space is showing on the device? Run Express, is now only a map update offered? Try to update the map. What happens now and if you get an error message what does it say?

  • "Please run Express again. Are you only offered a map update or are you still being offered software updates?"

No software update offered - only maps .

Except for the first time I tried and then I had to do a software only update.  I just now  noticed when starting up the software says copyright 2022 so it is probably safe to assume the software was updated teh first try

Since then I have only been offered map updates. That has been the case for  the last 10ish times I have tried and was again when I tried just now.

    On free space:

According to my Mac the Garmin drive only has 653.4 MB free.

The 32 GB SD card is mounted as a separate drive. It has 27.96 GB free  according to my mac. On os a Garmin folder. in that folder is 4 files all dated July 10, 2021 (I believe that is when I last updated maps):

    gmapprom.gma  3KB

    gmapprom.img   3.94GB

    gmapprom.unl 25 bytes

    gmappupdate.gsd 30 bytes.

"Try to update the map. What happens now and if you get an error message what does it say?"

    I get in order

    1) maps available after I select the device

    2) After I hit install i get the EULA.

    3) After I hit accept I get the "Important notes before we begin" screen

    4) After I hit continue I get 1 of 2 preparing maps" screen

    5) then I get "We're unable to install the updates" in a red bar.

        Below that its says"

"The latest software does not fit on your device's internal memory. Please contact Product Support for help with updating your software"

    Any other ideas to try?

    Thanks,

    -karen

  • That should be ample free space. Couple of things to try and if still no joy you'll need to call Product Support

Check the sd card isn't locked.

Try switching your device from MTP to mass storage mode.

  • Try switching your device from MTP to mass storage mode.

    How do I do that?

    Thanks.
