Garmin Express 7.12 crashing as soon as my zumo is connected

I just got an update to Express 7.12 and now it crashes the moment my zumo 595's drives are popping up in Finder.

With the zumo still connected it doesn't even start again - immediately crashes on the splash screen. Only when I disconnect the zumo it will startup again.

This is on a MacBook Pro M1 (2020) with macOS Monterey 12.3.

  • Same here on iMac running on 11.6.4 with nüvi2599.

  • Same here on macOS 10.13.6 with zumo 345

  • Same here on macOS 11.6.4 with my nüvi 255W. Yes, it's an older device, but it is useful to connect it to get new maps downloaded onto the iMac for Basecamp to use.

(My GPSMAP 64st mounts and can be updated under Express 7.12 just fine.)

This is the first problem I've ever seen with Express and my devices. I wish I hadn't upgraded to 7.12...

  • Same here on iMac, Express closes when I connect Drive Smart 50

  • Same here. MacBook Pro 2019. with BMW Navigator V.  OS 12.2.1 Starts when Garmin is not connected and crashes as soon as Garmin is connect/detected. Does not start when Garmin is connected before. Really annoying. Please Garmin do something about this issue asap. Basecamp functions normal.

  • I believe that I have found a solution. (Or, at least a workaround until a newer version of Express is released.)

I made a call to the Automotive section at Garmin Support, and he said they had found a solution only yesterday. He had me remove my map chip from my nüvi 255W, then quit and reopen Express 7.12, wait until the icons for my devices appeared in the Home screen, then connect my nüvi 255W without the card installed, wait until it mounted and the green dot appeared, then re-insert the map chip. (Mine is a 16 mB micro chip containing the City Navigator North America NT map which is inside an adapter to into fit the nüvi 255W slot.) After reinserting the chip and waiting for that to mount, I could update the map data like normal.

When I said that I could mount without issue my 64st with an Upper Midwest Fishing Guide map chip for area lake depths, he said that the problem "may only occur with some installed chips."

I requested that this situation be addressed in future versions of Express.

I am currently in the midst of a map update to that installed chip and everything seems to be running smoothly.

  • This should be resolved with Garmin Express version 7.12.1.
