Nuvi 270 shuts off if SD card inserted and USB connected

I know the 270 is ancient, but I really would hate to throw it out simply because I can't install a map on it.

I have a Nuvi 270 and I want to install Europe maps on it.  With my 270 connected via USB to my Mac, Garmin Express finds it and prompts me to upload some maps.  The problem is that I have less than 1GB free, and the maps are much larger than that.

If I insert an SD card (any card, including ones that freshly formatted with FAT), the 270 shuts down after about 15 seconds, just when it's about to connect to the Mac.  So it appears that the combination of SD card + USB breaks my 270.

Without the SD card, I can't install any maps (why would Garmin ever create a GPS with insufficient memory?????).  How can I fix this?

  • Well way back then maps weren't that large.  Modern Garmins can handle the larger maps and the other data they use.

Have you bought maps to install on it? If so you would be better off getting a refund and buying a newer Garmin with lifetime maps. If you want to continue then cloning your device may help, see www.poi-factory.com/.../39231

  • The Nuvi already has lifetime maps, which is why I'm still trying to revive it.

I was able to update the U.S. map without the SD card installed.  I'm surprised that worked because I could have sworn years ago that it wasn't possible.

So what I want to do is remove the U.S. map and replace it with the Europe map.  I don't see any way to remove maps from Garmin Express.
