Garmin Express says it sync'ed with my Edge 510 but Garmin Connect doesn't show the new ride.

The subject says it. I used my Edge 510 yesterday for the first time in some months. I charged it & used it on a ride & it behaved normally, including the Save process after the ride. I plugged it into my Mac Mini (running macOS 11.2 (Big Sur)) and the Finder can see the 510 (and I can browse its contents and and see its files, including the one created for yesterday's ride), and Garmin Express (v7.3.1.0) did the normal syncing behavior and then said it had sync'ed the 510, but when I use Express to lead to Garmin Connect (on the web), Connect doesn't show the new ride.

I don't know if it's relevant, but the first few times I plugged the 510 into the Mac after yesterday's ride, while the Finder could see the 510, the Garmin Express could not. It took a hard reset of the 510, plus several disconnects of the 510 from the Mac and reconnects before Express could see it, sync it, and *say* it sync'ed it successfully. (I also had ridewithgps.com set up to automatically upload the data for each ride when I plugged the 510 into the Mac and went to the web site via Safari on the Mac, but that's not happening now, either. Again, I don't if that's relevant here — maybe they changed the web site behavior — but it seems like it might be.)

Anyone have any idea how to get my ride data flowing to Garmin Connect again?

Thanks in advance,

Rico

  • It was a corrupted .fit file (the format the 510 uses to store each workout & send it up to Garmin's web site). Andrew at Garmin had me try to upload it "manually" (i.e. via a Garmin web page), and when that failed we tried to run one of their "fix-it" tools on the file, and when that failed I emailed it to him & he manually edited it (mostly deleted some junk from the end of it) and fed it to their system & it was accepted & is now displayed by Garmin Connect normally. I deleted the bad file from the 510 (via the Mac's Finder) and have used the 510 again twice since & it worked normally. Not sure how the file got corrupted in the first place, but it *might* have been related to not properly unmounting the 510 from the Mac before unplugging it, or maybe not waiting for the (amazingly slow) file transfer to occur.

  • , if you have issues with this, you can always just insert the zipped fit file into this post and we will repair it and see what is going on.

Some tips to help minimize the occurrence of corrupt fit files:

    • Keep the number of files in the \GARMIN\ACTIVITY folder on the device’s file system to a minimum using these directions: Removing Recorded Activities on a Garmin Fitness Device If you delete the files in your activity folder with a Mac computer, then empty the trash folder before you unplug your device from the computer.
    • Try to avoid excessive button presses during your activity.
    • Regularly check for firmware updates.
