Does GE Know How to Read Version Installed?

Garmin Express does not correctly report the installed version of software on my GPSMAP 64s.

I've had device software version 5.9 installed on the device, confirmed with the 'About' option on the device, and I can affirm I did the installation of that software. But when I connect the 64s to the computer (2018 MBP 4-port running macOS 11.1, Garmin Express V7.2.0.0 reported the device software as V5.6.

Now I just recently installed GPSMAP 64s software version 6.1, and now Garmin Express is reporting that I have device software version 5.5 installed on the device. The device shows version 6.1 when I use the 'About' option on the device.

What's going on here?

  • Any idea when Garmin Express will correctly report the version of software installed on the GPS?

  • This has occurred on devices in the past when the file GarminDevice.xml has corrupted or not correctly updated. Try deleting that, you'll find it in the Garmin folder, then reboot your device. That will force it to recreate the xml file based on current software on the device.

  • No joy.

Also recreated the system.xml file and still GE reports the wrong installed software. Interestingly, GE reports V5.50 and that is not showing up in the system.xml file, while V6.10 is what is installed on the device and shows up in the system.xml file.

  • Try reporting it to Garmin then, sounds like an Express issue.

  • 5.9 and 6.1 are still Beta firmware versions so maybe thats why GE doesn’t see them.

  • That would do it, wasn't aware of that Slight smile

  • Really?  Why would that do it?

I never said that GE doesn't see them. I said that GE is erroneously reporting the installed version, like it's making stuff up. Please confirm that GE intentionally and by design erroneously reports the installed version of software if it is beta. Please explain how that works.

I would think that GE merely goes to read the installed version in the GarminDevice or system xml file(s) and reports it. It's there, you can open the xml files and see it. I doubt GE is designed to report otherwise.

GE is wrongly reporting the installed version. Like it's making stuff up.

Garmin CONNECT sees the installed version of software correctly.

  • Beings GE will not install the Beta version and you have to do it manually than I don’t see this as an issue.  Maybe GE should see the version but this is some of the trade offs of being a Beta Tester.

  • There's nothing obvious in the GarminDevice or system xml files that indicates a beta release, and the version indication is a simple line in a file. Clearly any software that is looking for the installed this goes there and reads what's there.

What's interesting is that I had V5.9 installed and V5.6 was indicated by GE. Then when I installed V6.1, GE indicated V5.5. Too random and chaotic.

But like I said, CONNECT reads the version correctly. GE does not. Seems to indicate a problem with GE.

  • Hopefully Garmin will follow this thread so the issue won’t end up in the final version.
