I have uninstalled the Garmin Express application completely, them reinstalled v6.12.0.0, and it seems to have done the trick.
If you decide to try this, follow every step in the link above. I tried the simple "drag to trash" approach without going after all the libraries/preferences/caches and that didn't work. Following all 21 steps in the link above did work.
Amazing - - I happened to hover with the mouse and discovered that the login and password boxes are there but not visible. I carefully entered my credentials and was able to make it work.
