6.10 Cannot connect to the Garmin Express Service

Since updating to GE 6.10 I can no longer launch the app. It quits with the error message 'Cannot connect to the Garmin Express Service.'
Running Mac OS 10.14.1 on a 2015 MacBook Pro 15"
  • Perfectblack2 and perfectblack Looking at the site you posted. That is not an official site for downloading software. If someone needs to download Garmin Express for mac, they should be going here.

If you still want to accept the risk, feel free to search for and download it.

Thanks for letting me know the reason. I agree that I shouldn't post 3rd party link on this forum, sorry for that.

I hope there would be an upgrade on Garmin express to fix this issue. I'm pretty sure there's a bug on latest Garmin express since this issue can reproduce on 3 different mac with latest OSX.

Also I would be very appreciated if Garmin can provide an official download link for old version. I took the risk to find an old version(v6.5) of Garmin in a random website and it does fix this issue.
  • Not a problem. Getting late here and I've been deleting spam all night long. Just thought it was another one. :(

I have this problem, too. Just discovered this morning after my first run in a couple weeks. I just updated to the most recent version of Garmin Express over the weekend. I tried rebooting, uninstalling and reinstalling, nothing. I finally got my data to upload by installing an old version of Garmin Express from a third party site, but as soon as it installed, a message came up that there was a new version and that window couldn't be closed. I run Sierra 10.12.6. Really hope there is a fix soon for this problem!
  • Same. Won't start on Mojave. But, I removed my Garmin save files with:

    sudo rm -Rf Library/Application\ Support/Garmin

And then uninstalled Garmin Express and reinstalled. Now it works.

I have the same issue Express "cannot connect to the background service and will close". MacBook Air Mojave 10.14.2.

Same thing happening to me. Latest version of Garmin Express and latest version of macOS (10.14.1). Never installed before. This is my first Garmin experience - it's not going well.

I saw some posts about using the old Garmin Map Update, which itself works fine, but when you come to select a map it takes to you a webpage that makes you use Garmin Express.

As a software engineer, I find it incredibly frustrating that Garmin has broken this app in to a UI and background service. Really, do I need to have a background service looking for new maps all the time, using my memory, network resources, or could I just have the app do that when I opt in and open it myself (I can only assume that's what a background service is for, because I can't load the app yet..). I must have 50+ apps continuously running in the background and checking for updates. I want to update my maps _maybe_ once a year, but yes, please check every 5mins to see if they've been updated.

Either way, there's 20+ threads about not being able to connect to a background service. Surely it's obvious this is a bad design.

Follow up - I manually ran the background service from terminal -

Looks like the Garmin Express App for Mac is an Electron App and it's connecting to Microsoft when starting up (probably for automatic upgrades).

Seems like Microsoft doesn't like some countries or IP addresses and just hangs up rather ungracefully:
