No 1490LMT Maps

My nuvi 1490 maps were old (2012). I installed GE 6.8.0.0 on a Mac and updated NA maps to 2019 ver 6.30 which I believe are the latest. When I turn on the nuvi no detailed maps appear. Major highways/cities show up but individual streets are missing. Under tools, settings, maps, info, the list of maps are blank instead of check boxes against NA City Navigator. I tried to update the maps again this time with GE on a PC with Win 10 and wired ethernet connection. Still the same result. Tried a different usb cable and still no maps. There are no error messages when the device powers on. There is a 16GB micro SD card and I can see files and contents of both internal memory and SD card on the Mac/PC.

I suspect something went wrong with the either the map or system files for the maps to not appear. Should the firmware be reflashed.

Please help.
  • Then I can't think of anything else :(
  • At this point, you don't have much to lose. If I were you I would try to do the map update to a blank SD card using cloning (just google "Garmin Maps Cloning Method").

The cloning of maps with GE to the card was successful but still no maps. I appreciate everyone input and patience. Many thanks.
  • Are you sure the card is FAT32? Your device can't read it unless it is. If still no joy I'd call Garmin.
  • Also, check the free space in internal memory on your 1490. It is not uncommon on the 1xxx series for internal storage to get completely filled up which can cause various types of failures. You need at least a few MB of free space in internal storage (20 or 30 MB should be sufficient), so you may need to delete some old maps, orphaned files, unused text and language files, etc.

I know Garmin does not support talking about device issues on this forum, so you may want to move the discussion to a different forum. I think there is a good chance your 1490 can be salvaged.

Edit: Oh! One other little detail ... since you are using a Mac, make sure you empty the trash on both internal storage and the SD card.

No need. This is about a map update issue so it's fine.
