No 1490LMT Maps

My nuvi 1490 maps were old (2012). I installed GE 6.8.0.0 on a Mac and updated NA maps to 2019 ver 6.30 which I believe are the latest. When I turn on the nuvi no detailed maps appear. Major highways/cities show up but individual streets are missing. Under tools, settings, maps, info, the list of maps are blank instead of check boxes against NA City Navigator. I tried to update the maps again this time with GE on a PC with Win 10 and wired ethernet connection. Still the same result. Tried a different usb cable and still no maps. There are no error messages when the device powers on. There is a 16GB micro SD card and I can see files and contents of both internal memory and SD card on the Mac/PC.

I suspect something went wrong with the either the map or system files for the maps to not appear. Should the firmware be reflashed.

Please help.
  • Reflashing won't help anything. I assume you don't have a backup so can't restore the map?

You do have lifetime maps? If so Express should offer to reinstall the map. The fact it doesn't points to you not having lifetime maps.

Unfortunately I don't have a backup. Yes I have the LMT (lifetime maps and bluetooth) model. The maps have been reloaded 5-6 times "successfully" on PC/Mac all with the same result no detailed map result. Also says there are no POIs.

Why you think it is a map problem. I thought the system was faulty.
  • Where are you not seeing the detailed map? Does it show in BC? If not check you have the detail level set to highest and you haven't selected the Base map.

From the main menu item "View Map".

Just installed BC and plugged in 1490. BC does not see the nuvi. Finder shows Garmin and SD card drives.
  • Run through this FAQ. I know it applies to GE but it helps resolve other issues too https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?fa...kF65Y5pC2CbJGA

If that doesn't help you'll need to contact Product Support. As you haven't updated your maps for a while it could be an account issue. There is a suggestion in lifetime maps terms and conditions that if you don't update within 2 years there may be an issue. relevant part is:

A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more.
  • Are you using a micro SD card in your 1490? If you have the North America 1490, it is very short on internal storage. I would try putting in a new micro SD card (at least 8 GB) and try to reinstall the map with Garmin Express.

Edit: reread your post and see that you are using a 16 GB card. What folders and data files are shown on the card?

Was on the phone and chat with Garmin Support for 90 mins and they had pretty much the same story. Well the 1490 is 10 years old and the nuvi could not read the current map file properly. They don't offer past map files and the unit is toast. I said the nuvi was working fine before the update. Well this sometimes happens to old units. Why isn't there a warning that there is a possibility of screwing up the unit before performing an update. Well that might be a good idea. Could it be a system problem because it connects fine with Garmin Express but fails with Boot Camp. Well Boot Camp is an older application and we go by GE. Nothing can be done.

I am thinking of trying to find some previous map files and copying them directly to the card/drive.

The photo shows the files/folders on the SD card.

Just had a thought. My wife has a nuvi 1300 with NA CN 2012. Can I copy the 1300 map from the internal drive to the 1490 via basecamp or hook up both with USB cables then copying files from drive to drive..
  • Probably not because the map is locked to your wife's nuvi, but you could try as your unlock files may still be on your 1490. If that doesn't work you may be able to get the unlock files using this method:

    1) Log into your myGarmin account.
    2) Click on the myMaps tab.
    3) Find your GPS in the list and click on the details link to the right of the image of your device.
    4) Find and copy the Product Key for your map product.
    5) Connect your GPS to the computer.
    6) At the top right of the page there's a "Unlock On the Road/Trail Maps" link. Click on that. You'll be taken to a "Unlock Maps" page.
    7) Scroll to the bottom of that page. You'll see a section with the Unit ID field filled in.
    8) Enter the "Product Key/Coupon Code" (from 4)) and then click the "Retrieve Unlocks" button.

That will (re)create the GMA and UNL files on your device.

I appreciate your help and instructions. I executed the steps and Retrieve Unlocks was completed. Unfortunately no map details appear and the list of maps in Map, Info is still blank.
