Garmin Express 6.6.0.0 on Mac issue updating Zumo 550 map

Well the answer depends on numerous things. What map did your Zumo come with? Did it come with Lifetime maps? If it did and you had all of NA installed but have since installed Canada + Border states instead, then use Express to update that map. Once it is up to date run Express again and you'll get the option for the full map. Or download the full map to your Mac and use MapInstall to install the portion you want to your Zumo.

Yes, I believe I purchased Lifetime maps a while ago (the GPS is probably 10 years old). I used to have NA installed but I may have chosen Cananda + Border states for a trip a few years ago. I didn't ride for a while and now when I try to use the Zumo it doesn't show the local roads (only major highways). The old app allowed me to chose a map, but the new Express does not. How do I download the full map? Do I need an application other than Garmin Express?

I'll answer my own question for the benefit of others that may have the same issue. I contacted Garmin Support and this is what they told me:

This device, having been designed back in 2006, has a limited amount of memory. The maps have grown significantly since then, and because of that growth, the device will not accommodate the maps the way it used to.

Because there are devices out there that have limited memory, we break the North American Maps down into smaller regions. The smallest, and only one that seems to still fit on your device is the Canada and Border states. This does not mean that you can't have all the maps, but it does mean that we have a little more work in order to get them on your system.

To load the rest of the maps, you will first need to download the maps onto your computer. Please refer to the article below.

Installing maps to the computer using Garmin Express

Next you will need to get a 4GB SD Card to increase the memory in your zumo. This device is not designed to work with a card any bigger than 4GB.

When you downloaded the maps to your computer, the program MapInstall was also downloaded. You will then need to install the missing states with the MapInstall program. Please refer to the article below about how to do that.

However, MapInstall would not recognize my Zumo 550 on the Mac, so I downloaded everything to my Windows PC at work, and I was able to install additional maps to my GPS.
