There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect

Since updating to Garmin Express v6.4.0.0 I've been unable to use Garmin Express to sync with my Edge 1030. At least that's what it's telling me (I was able to use the application to add and remove some data fields and widgets today despite it giving me an error!)

Further, today I tried to sync data with ride video and Virb Edit is telling me the device is not connected. All the while GE tells me it's there!

I attached a photo to show the confusion...the Edge shows connected, GE shows a connection and Virb says there's nothing there.

Very frustrating...

I've tried a variety of 'fixes' to date, including (but not limited to):
Try another Mac (I have iMac, Mac Mini and also MacBook available) - all to no avail
Deleted old rides etc from Edge (all have sync'd over the air with Garmin Connect servers & Strava)
Hard 'factory reset' on the Edge thus wiping everything
Removed and re-added to GE
Uninstalled and completely fresh installed (new download etc) GE on 2 of the machines
Different USB leads

My main machine is running as follows:
iMac 27" 5k i5 3.2GHz, 32Gb RAM
macOS 10.13.4

Help gratefully received! ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1343718.jpg
  • Well I am more or less in the same boat: I received my new Edge 1030 yesterday and even during the initial setup in GE - at the "settings" step - I receive the message about the sync error. I still get the sync error message each time I connect the device to the Mac - sync via phone looks okay, can't say anything about file transfer since it is a new device. I tested various scenarios:
    iMac+macOS 10.13.4+Garmin Express 6.4.0.0: Sync error
MacBookAir+macOS 10.13.4+ Garmin Express 5.4.1.0: Sync error (also after updating to 6.4.0.0)
    Dell Latitude+Window 10 Enterprise+Garmin Express 6.4.0.0: It works!
But I have also already read about guys having the same issues under Win10. So my first thought it is macOS related is not correct.

So I would also glad to receive a hint to solve this. Because it does not look like, the problem is on the device side!?

    Thanks!

I have a forerunner 10, and having the same issue. My mac on High Sierra does not read the garmin when i try to connect via USB to sync :(
  • Yep, I have a brand new edge 1030 and i've run through the same things you all have attempted. This morning however I connected the edge to a windows 10 VM running on my Mac and lo and behold the sync works perfectly. It would seem to be a Mac issue. Also, I did try on two different Macs a new one with USB C and an older one with standard USB. On neither platform would the sync work. But in Windows it seems to work just fine.

Even though I have said in my first reply, have read from Win10 users having the same issue, I gave it also a try on my iMac with the bootcamp Win10 installation. And guess what? No issues at all! So from a personal experience I would sign the Mac-only option too!
  • I'm having the same problem with my Edge 1000. Perhaps the problem is the latest Mac OS update. My iMac is running the latest version, 10.13.4, and I'm getting the sync error.

Went to my MacBook Pro, which is on 10.12.6, and it worked perfectly.

  • Hello,
I had the same issue with my Mac.
what I did is insert my sd card with mal is the sd card slot behind the edge. Since sync is ok.
if you want to let this sd slot empty, you can perhaps try to simply lock or unlock the little part to lock or unlock the sd card.

Thanks for the work around. I put in a SD card and now it is syncing on my Mac computers too.

It is still a strange behavior for such an expensive device - especially since it works fine on Win10 computers.
  • Having the same problem with my new 1030 on my MacBook Pro. Tried my Windows 10 machine and sync works fine. Me thinks something is amiss with version 6.4.0.0 on the Mac side of things.
  • Having the same issues, since last week. I've not upgraded but Express can no longer sync to Garmin Connect. I have an Edge 500, Garmin Express V4.1.27.0 Mac 10.9.5 which has worked fine for years and has now stopped working.
