Dash cam 55

New Christmas present installed and fine until l used GE to update the latest speed camera. Now it is stuck in American English and voice recognition no longer works. Lots of other issues as well. Anyone else seeing this? It’s certainly getting negative feedback from others on Amazon with similar issues.
  • Doesn't seem like Garmin really cares much about the Dash Cam products - there is not even one forum dedicated to them - despite the fact that they are in the third generation.

  • How is it stuck in American English? Are you saying you can't change it in Settings? Same with VR. Often after a software update you need to reset stuff.

    Yes - thanks. I think it’s been ‘Appled’ myself, as it is now saying a drive can’t be initialised. Every time you turn it on it goes though a new setup routine but doesn’t offer any other languages. None are visible on GE either. I’ve tried GE restore and then reinstall using WebUpdater along with multiple resets...

    I have several Garmin products too and brand loyalty prompted my latest purchase. I’m hoping support can help me in the new year. It’s annoying though!

    Update - rang Garmin support who recognised that the unit was corrupted and offered a reconditioned 55 in exchange. They wanted the return sent at my cost and estimated taking 10 - 14 working days to check the fault and make the exchange! What the heck has gone wrong there? As I said, I have bought a few units form Garmin now, but I think they are losing the plot with their customer support.

    Luckily for me, I purchased mine from Halfords, who were excellent - my new unit arrives tomorrow.

    I think I had exactly the same issues as you with my new Dash Cam 55 just after Christmas. All functions worked fine on first use, then connected to Garmin Express that wanted to do a software update to 3.40 which I allowed (even though I thought it was odd as current software level was 3.40). Anyway after that Dash Cam 55 had British American as only language option, Voice control functionality & option vanished, all Speed Camera warnings vanished. Had to go through 7 button presses every time camera powered on to get to Dash Cam working.

    Rang Garmin, told that this was a known bug at level 3.1 not 3.4, offered 14 day exchange cycle. Declined, like you went back to Halfords who supplied brand new replacement within 48 hours.

    Have yet to connect the replacement to Garmin Express, probably won't for a while.

    (BTW have you tried to download the Dash Cam Player for Mac v2.5? My iMac says the package is corrupted - see my post in Mac Software forum)

    Thanks Raven - identical problem. I reckon its Garmin Express and possibly an issue with iMac compatibility, although I wasnt able to download the 2018 EU safety camera update on either iMac or Windows versions.

    Now you mention it, my first one tried to upgrade from 3.3 to 3.4 too!

    Forgot to add - I tried to download the Dash Cam Player too - same problem. I think we are pushed towards using the VIRB App instead?

    Took a risk & connected my replacement fully functional Dash Cam 55 to Garmin Express. Told me that an update was available - for the safety cameras. I declined, too much hassle if it goes wrong again.
    Any way these 2 shots of the "about" screens might help people (or even Garmin if they read this) understand if they also have this problem - the key difference is the missing Voice Control file in the failed unit.

    Raven - sounds like you did much as I did as mentioned above. In ‘About’, what version EU safety cam (UK) do you have. Mines July 2017. I can’t get it to update to the 2018 version.
