Garmin Express doesn't recognize my Forerunner 305 on macOS High Sierra beta

Hello,

Garmin Express 5.6.2.0 doesn't recognize my Forerunner 305 on macOS High Sierra 10.13 Beta (17A360a). It seems that the problem started when I upgraded to macOS 10.13 beta.

When I connect my Forerunner 305 it beeps as if it was recognized but Garmin Express keeps showing the grey dot and actually freezes my computer for a couple of seconds and seems to briefly turn on and off my bluetooth.

Does anyone have this kind of issue? I know it's a beta version of macOS, so I'm hoping this will be solved when the final version is released, but perhaps there's a workaround? I've tried to connect my garmin on Windows and it worked, so it seems to be related to Mac only.

UPDATE: The same thing happens on macOS High Sierra 10.13 Gold Master Candidate.
  • Both GPSmap 62s and RV760LM are USB storage devices and as such do not require dedicated drivers. I don't think there can be any workaround other than providing dedicated drivers for the OS. I am not familiar with the way drivers are developed for MacOS, so I don't know who should be responsible for providing drivers - Garmin or Apple.

Thanks tmk2 for bringing some clarity into the issue. Yeah, it's hard to tell if it's Apple's or Garmin's fault, but I find it really hard to believe that it's not possible for Garmin to offer a custom macOS driver to be installed by owners of older devices.
  • Depending on OS principles and architectrue, which - again - I am not familiar with, it may be not possible to introduce a 3rd party driver into the OS without Apple's blessing.
  • Hello,

Maybe this old trick could work again (using an old USB2 hub instead of the USB3 port directly) ?

If someone's got this old hardware and can test ...
  • Yep...just upgraded to High Sierra and my iMac won't recognize the Garmin as a USB mass storage device either. Before the upgrade, it worked just fine. So apparently the issue is compatibility with the version of Express and Mac OSX. Hopefully Garmin doesn't take forever to get this resolved.
  • What type of Garmin device are you talking about? The FR305 which is discussed here IS NOT A MASS STORAGE DEVICE and will never be recognized as such. The issue is not with compatibility of latest Mac OS with Garmin Express, but as I already tried to explain, the lack of dedicated Garmin drivers in Mac OS.

And if you have issues with another Garmin model, then the issue is certainly quite different than the one discussed here.

  • Oops..yeah sorry. I just googled the issue on my Vivofit HR and it led me to this thread.
  • Here's what Garmin Support has to say:

    Hello Irwin,

I reached out to our Mac group and it looks like they are not going to be able to get the older Edge 305 to work with 10.13.1.
    >>
    >> I do apologize.

    &
The Edge 305 is over 10 years old. We try to do everything we can to get a older devices to work with modern operating systems. I don't think there is fitness company out there that tries to keep older devices in the loop and keep up with what operating systems are asking for today.

So, they're not even working on a fix or a workaround.

Same problem for me with my Montana 650t and the Oregon 750t after upgrading to the macOS High Sierra 10.13.1.
I run Garmin express 5.8.0.0. and both GPS'es connects shortly with Garmin express and I can also see them shortly in Finder, before they reconnect.
Wish I had heard about this problem before updating OS :(
  • My Edge 305 has same issue after upgrading to macOS High Sierra 10.13.1. The third response from Garmin correctly identified that there is a known problem and it doesn't look like there's any plan to resolve it. They will offer a 20% rebate if you purchase a new unit from their website and return your older unit. Unfortunately, it's easy to find new units for sale online at more than 20% off so that offer doesn't really value their longtime customers........

Planing to create an older OS boot disk to occasionally upload the data from my 305.
