Garmin Express doesn't recognize my Forerunner 305 on macOS High Sierra beta

Hello,

Garmin Express 5.6.2.0 doesn't recognize my Forerunner 305 on macOS High Sierra 10.13 Beta (17A360a). It seems that the problem started when I upgraded to macOS 10.13 beta.

When I connect my Forerunner 305 it beeps as if it was recognized but Garmin Express keeps showing the grey dot and actually freezes my computer for a couple of seconds and seems to briefly turn on and off my bluetooth.

Does anyone have this kind of issue? I know it's a beta version of macOS, so I'm hoping this will be solved when the final version is released, but perhaps there's a workaround? I've tried to connect my garmin on Windows and it worked, so it seems to be related to Mac only.

UPDATE: The same thing happens on macOS High Sierra 10.13 Gold Master Candidate.
  • Same here with Vivoactive HR. It also seems that since the time I plugged it into macbook with High Sierra, it's unable to connect to windows PC as well - I get the "USB device not recognized" popup in windows, and the message in Device manager is:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
The USB device returned an invalid USB device descriptor.

It worked in this same PC few days before, and the only thing that changed meanwhile was plugging VAHR to that High Sierra macbook.

EDIT: I restarted all devices (VAHR, mac, windows pc) and it connected to PC at least.

I keep having the same issue on the final version of MacOS 10.13 High Sierra and Garmin Express 5.7.0.0.

On MacOS 10.13.1 beta and Garmin Express 5.7.0.0 my computer completely freezes when I plug in my Forerunner 305. When I unplug the Forerunner, it takes about 1 minutes for my computer to start responding again.
  • Hey hey...i have the same problem with MacOS High Sierra 10.13, Garmin Express 5.7.0.0 und Forerunner 305. When i connect the Forerunner...the Mac reconected all my USB devices...incl. the Touchpad und Magicmous....i need help!

I also have an issue with an old Garmin device (Edge 305) refusing to connect on High Sierra. It just acts as if it's not plugged in. I tried to use an older mac but then I couldn't add the device as it just kept saying that it couldn't reach Garmin's servers...
  • I have this issue too. iMac running Mac OS X High Sierra and Garmin Express 5.7.0.0. Forerunner 205. Garmin Express does not detect the Forerunner.
  • Just hypothesising here:

The Forerunner 305 requires dedicated Garmin USB support on the OS side, as it is not a USB storage device. It's possible that Garmin USB support has been abandoned in latest MacOS releases.

This is what I got from Garmin support:

"Mac OS 10.13 doesn't appear to have the correct USB drivers. You will need to sync the watch with your Windows 7 computer or a Mac not running the beta software."

I guess macOS 10.13 doesn't have the correct drivers regardless whether is a beta or not. I did have the issue with the final release of 10.13 as well and I'm having it now with 10.13.1 Beta. I'm trying to report it to Apple using Feedback Assistant.

Let me know if you have any success fixing this somehow. I like my Forerunner and Garmin (with Apple) should do something to fix this. If they don't, I don't see my self buying another Garmin device in the future just to see it bricked in a couple of years.

    So I guessed right.

This is exactly why the proprietary Garmin USB connection were abandoned years ago. Latest Garmin devices are standard USB storage, and this makes many things much simpler and less dependend on OS support.

So does that mean those of us solely on a mac can't sync anymore and no fix is coming? That would be disappointing.
