Can't successfully download newly purchased maps

I purchased the Europe NT maps on an SD card to use on my nüvi 57 (which has North America maps preinstalled). I'm using Mac to install the maps. I installed the GCP to use with Safari. (Garmin Express is also installed on this computer if this is of any relevance.) The OS X firewall is off. The SD card is formatted in FAT32.

After this is set, I go to myGarmin, myMaps, where I get a link to download the new maps. It checks a couple of things, tells me there's not enough space in the Garmin device, lets me choose the SD card to install there. Once this is selected and the terms and conditions accepted, the download begins. It increments slowly and with hiccups (which make the download "fail" and need that I press a "Continue" button to resume where it left). If during this process it doesn't stall, and I've tried this many times, it reaches 50%. After this, it goes to 0% again, and the nightmare begins anew.

I've read through a number of posts on this forum with the same problem, most of which don't report a solution. Where there was a solution, I've tried it (e.g., try having the SD card in a different USB port instead of inside the Garmin device, try downloading to a USB stick, firewall on, firewall off...) Nothing changes the failure at the end.

I've contacted the Garmin support and their suggestion was to turn ON the plugin for all pages. This only seems to make the plugin behave weirdly (plugin not detected at my.garmin.com or resuming download stalled at "Checking compatibility..."), but I've tried it and it isn't making any progress in the best of cases.

I'm doing this over a Wifi connection. I've seen that this could be a problem, but unfortunately my computer doesn't have an ethernet port (as most computers nowadays). The connection is otherwise quite reliable and fast at 100Mbps, and I've downloaded far larger files over this without a single problem, in less time than it takes this to reach 50%.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed to get these maps on the device, as I'm going on a trip in a few hours and need the navigation. Thanks!
  • Solving this before you go on a trip in a few hours could be tricky, but one way of just about removing any possible error (apart from your wifi connection) is to download the map to a clone, then if that works copy the files across. Google 'download garmin map to clone' and you should find the instructions.

    This FAQ might also help

  • Tried cloning it, same result: painstakingly got to 50%, and then it reset. What I'm getting from that FAQ is that the download actually works (if very poorly), but then the plugin fails to write onto the SD card/USB stick. The SD card clearly allows writing as I've copied over the XML file to a new folder, and every time this whole process is attempted, the first thing it does is to write an Id.txt file with some serial number in it -- so it can actually write there. I've set a myriad of permissions to allow the plugin to work freely (but I fail to see how this would be related to its ability to write onto the SD card).

The SD card has a size of 32GB. Could this large size be a potential problem for the plugin?

Same issue... exactly as you described yours...

I have the same problem. It gets down to about 50%, then it resets to zero, tells me that there is just about a minute left, and the problem starts all over again.

    I have done the following:

    a. Purchased brand new 64GB SD card - No change
    b. Tried both an up-to-date MacBook as well as an up-to-date HP laptop - No change
    c. Have tried the process with wifi and ethernet cable - No change
    d. Ensured all my systems (where I'm trying this) have the latest Garmin plugins - No change

I'm convinced that the problem is with Garmin and not with anything I'm doing or my devices, and I'm quite sure a solution does not exist as no one here has been able to come up with one.
  • 64Gb card could be the issue unless you've formatted it already as FAT32? It needs to be to work on most devices. What are you trying to update?

Sorry to hear that. Just to update my case: Gone through roughly the same steps you've described, yet I haven't been able to successfully download the maps. Also contacted Garmin support; they've been very nice, but their suggestions seem to be the same you can find in this forum. Sadly, I'm in the process of a refund request for the maps currently. Hope you have better luck! It'd be nice if you post here if you manage to solve this for anyone having the same problem in the future.
