macOS Sierra Edge 800 activities fail to upload

Dear All

Recently updated my MacBook to Sierra (10.12) Garmin Express was updated to 4.1.30.0. When connecting Edge 800 to MacBook the Sync seems to work in that there are no errors but nothing ends up in Garmin Connect. I can click on the Sync button in Garmin Express no change.

My current solution is to import the activity from the device directly.

Can Garmin please fix this.

  • There may be nothing for Garmin to fix. I've been using Sierra since it came out, and I've had no problems with my Edge 800. Check your settings; maybe something got screwed up.
  • I noticed in a related problem that was fixed by removing the device and then adding it to Garmin Express so I removed the Garmin Edge 800 from Garmin Express and then added it. Entered username/password for Garmin Connect - all OK.

Went for a short ride BUT the problem persists - it syncs without any error but activity is not uploaded.

Is there an option to trace the sync activity to determine the problem?

  • Found the problem !!!

It seems that the latest version of Garmin Express does not look for activities on the SD card.

I copied the latest activity from the SD card to Activities on the device and clicked the Sync button in Garmin Express and the activity was uploaded to Garmin Connect.

    Fix it Garmin.

We just tested this feature and Garmin Express 4.1.30.0 running on Sierra uploaded the activities from the SD card to Garmin Connect with no issues. Has your SD card been formatted recently? Maybe the wrong format was used if so. The format should be MS-DOS (FAT). Have you tried using a new SD card?

If those suggestions do not resolve the issue, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

  • Dear Garmin

The card has not been reformatted recently, it has been in the unit for over 2 years without any problems. The SD card had about 250 activities recorded and so I removed all but this months activities.

The SD card is FAT format and I ran "First Aid" (macOS Disk Utility) check and all was OK.

Then I went for a short ride storing the outbound ride on the SD card and the return ride on the Internal Storage. When the Edge 800 was connected to the MacBook only the ride in Internal Storage was uploaded.

I am going to purchase another 4GB microSD card and do another test - will report outcome.

    Update

Used a 8GB microSD card and created only a FAT16 4GB partition and copied files from original Garmin TOPO Aust/NZ microSD. Maps fail to authenticate - may need new microSD from Garmin as supplied maps are hardcoded to microSD - or I may switch to Openstreet maps.

I then repeated a short ride with outbound to microSD and return recorded to Internal Storage. When Edge 800 attached to MacBook ONLY the activity from Internal Storage was uploaded.

On the Edge 800 using the Menu->History->Activities I can see all activities with those on the microSD card prefixed with SD.

I have emailed Garmin Support and HOPE they can supply a fix.

  • So maybe something has changed in Sierra. I use internal storage for activities on my 800, and the card (not directly bought from Garmin) contains the maps (TOPO US 24k Northeast bought from Garmin as a DVD and now OpenMTB), so I haven't had any trouble with Express and activities. But a couple of days ago I updated the maps on my 800 (TOPO US hasn't changed in ages, but OpenMTB updates regularly), so I used Mapinstall. When I selected my card directly, it complained and said that I should select the Edge, but when I did that, it only showed internal storage. I wound up just directly installing the map on my card, and it's working fine. So maybe something has changed in Sierra about composite devices with more than one "disk".
  • Problem FIXED.

In desperation I reinstalled the latest version of Garmin Express for Mac (4.1.30.0) and when the install completed it synced the activities I had left on the SD card.

Went for another short ride with data stored on the SD card and when I connected the Edge 800 to my MacBook the ride was automatically uploaded.

    Thanks to All for input.
