Garmin Express won't update: "To continue, plug your nuvi 50 into the computer"

I have previously been able to update my nuvi 2757 maps using my computer. I have Lifetime Maps. Today I cannot update it because Garmin Express doesn't realize my Nuvi is plugged in.

My nuvi is plugged into the Mac computer using USB micro cable.
It is showing as a mounted volume in Finder and I can open files on it successfully, so I know the USB connection is fine.

I freshly re-downloaded Garmin Express, started it, clicked "install All" and got this message:
"PLUG IN YOUR DEVICE
"To continue, plug your nuvi 50 into the computer. [My device's name is "My Nuvi 50"]
"Searching for device... "

I quit Garmin Express, ejected the nuvi in Finder, unplugged it, restarted Garmin Express, and plugged the nuvi back in. Same result. It still cannot find the device.

I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

Has anyone hit a similar issue and found a solution?
