Please help in obtaining map download

First off, apologies if this isn't in the proper section. I've found the process of getting a City Navigator map downloaded so unbelievably frustrating and can't find a workable solution. I'm on a Macbook Pro with completely updated OS.

I go to my.garmin, log in, see the map I purchased (and my Montana 680t is connected and visible to the computer), and when I click "Add To Device," it just sends me to a mostly blank page in Safari. I tried the support solutions for the Garmin Communicator plug-in to no avail. I've read Garmin comments on Twitter saying they will not be updating the plug-in and Safari itself warns it is a dangerous one and not supported any longer.

So how in the world do I gain access to the map I purchased? Any working help would be greatly appreciated!
  • Support for plug ins is being withdrawn by browsers due to security concerns. At the moment, until Garmin come up with an alternative solution, your best bet is to use IE11, which still supports the Garmin Communicator plug in.
  • IE 11 will not run on a Mac unless you use a Windows Virtual Machine (such as Boot Camp).

I have not tried map purchase/installation using Firefox, but it often works where Safari refuses.

    Worth a try.

I apologize you are getting a blank screen when trying to add a map to your Montana 680t. The issue you have is not caused by the browser or the Garmin Communicator Plugin. We are aware of an issue with some devices showing a blank screen in myGarmin when they come with pre-installed TOPO maps. We [Garmin] have to correct this problem on your account. I have fixed yours so the map purchase should show on the myMaps page.

As for web browsers, we do recommend using Safari or Internet Explorer on pages that need our plugin. Chrome and Firefox tend to block our plugin if they are up to date.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.

  • The Communicator Plug-in will not work on Firefox nor Safari on my Mac.

The blank screen is not on my GPS, it is on Safari. No matter how many times I try to install the plug-in, the Garmin site says it's not installed.

Not sure why it's even mentioned as a solution by Garmin, when Garmin itself says the plug-in is no longer being updated. From Garmin on Twitter: "Unfortunately we are not updating Garmin Communicator Plug-in at this time. What are you using the plug in for?

Trying to install it on Firefox doesn't work, either. A pop-up from Garmin says Firefox is no longer supported. As well, Safari preferences gives a warning about the Communicator plug-in deeming it unsafe (when it did install at one time).

So, I've had to order my map on an SD card to be able to install it. I've now had to purchase the map twice, in separate forms. I am expecting a refund on the download purchase that can't be accessed. What if someone was in a true hurry for a map install? Wait, I was...so I found free, routable maps from Openstreetmap, for free. Thanks for nothing, Garmin. Get it together.
  • While it's true that the plug in is no longer being supported (since browsers are over time removing all NPAPI plug ins (not just Garmin ones) due to security concerns) the plug in still works on browsers that still allow NPAPI plug ins to run. If it's not working on your mac then it is almost certainly an issue with your browser or something else in your system blocking the download. It works perfectly on mine.

Trouble shooting issues on specific computers is virtually impossible over a forum, so your best bet is to contact Product Support. They can if needed remotely access your mac to determine what the issue is on your system.
