2017.20 Map Install on SD Card

Recently installed 2017.20 on my Nuvi 755T and, due to its size, it used the SD card for the first time. Garmin Express said it installed successfully. When I went to use it, it did not provide any directions to my destination. It simply said "Drive to 'XXXXX'" with the X's being the name of every destination I tried. The map would show my starting point with a perfectly straight magenta line that went straight to my destination. It did not follow any route. I thought that maybe the maps did not load successfully and I reloaded them. Same problem.

I then thought I would try taking the SD card out to see what happens. I shut down the GPS, took out the SD card and restarted it. Same problem. I checked the map info on the GPS and, even though the SD card was out of the unit, the map info said 2017.20. Did the unit get the map installed on it even though it was originally installed onto the card? Or is the unit just remembering the last map version installed and used?

Is there anything I can do to get my GPS to be usable again? Like I said, this was the first time the SD card was used. I did format it properly before inserting it into the unit.

I really needed it yesterday to travel from RI to NH and ended up having to print out MapQuest directions and read those while driving. What a PITA that is. It is amazing how easily we get dependent of technology!
  • Well if it said 2017.20 in MapInfo then all or part of that map is there, I assume it was checked? If it was and you're getting straight lines I suspect not all of the map was installed.

Try a reinstall and ensure the full map is installed.

I'm in the process of trying another reinstall. Before doing so, I transferred the folders on the SD card to my desktop. and deleted what was on the card. I just did an "Get info" on the Garmin folder and it said 2.78 GB. Is that the correct file size and what you were referring to as ensuring the full map is installed? Is there another way?
  • That sounds correct, but Express should indicate if its installing a full or partial update. Hopefully the reinstall will resolve it.
  • The full CN NA 2017.20 map file is 2.58 GB and if on SD card will be named gmapsupp.img or gmapsup1.img (if in internal storage will be named gmapprom.img). The 3D building map, named gmap3d.img is 228 MB. These files will be in the \Garmin folder whether on SD or internal storage.

The full JCV file, named D3060210A.jcv will be in the \Garmin\JCV folder of either the SD or internal, and is 827 MB.

My guess is that the map files were put on your SD card and the JCV file in internal storage. If it appears you have all 3 of these files and your device is still not navigating correctly, try a system reset.

The full install is completed with the file size again showing 2.78 GB. The same problems still exists.

I am now in the process of installing just the lower 49 states instead of all of North America into just the Garmin 755T without the SD card installed. If it works, I'm guessing there is some issue either with the card itself or the ability of the 755 to use the card properly. I'll let you know shortly.

I think it's time to try a system reset. I was able to load the lower 49 states and continue to have the same problem. So, I'm guessing it isn't necessarily the SD card that is the issue.

This is what I had as far as file sizes:
    gmapsup1.img - 2.78 GB
    gmap3d.img - couldn't find it
D3060210A.jcv - Mine is D2335240A.jcv at 784.9 MB is the difference due to the 49 states loaded and not NA?

JVC was in internal storage and not on the SD card.

How do I do a reset? I think I would like to start fresh.
  • You can find the master reset procedure here: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/faq/textsearch

Yes, I think you get a JCV file with a different name if you choose lower 49 instead of the full NA.

Edit: OOPS. Link isn't what I thought it was ... here are the master reset instructions copied from the Garmin FAQ:

    To perform a master reset on a LIVE 1695, 2300 series, nuvi 200, 205, 405, 500, 600, 700, 705, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1690 series, zumo 220, 450, 550, 660, and 665:

    1) Start with the device OFF and unplugged from power
    2) Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
    3) Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the device ON
    4) Release the power button when the device powers ON
    5) You will see a new message: "Do you really want to erase all user data?"
    6) Remove your finger from the touch screen when this message displays
    7) Touch Yes

Thank you for sending the reset link. I just went through the steps and my 755 is once again working. I appreciate both your support and sticking with me to resolve this issue.

When I go into Map Info on the 755 it has all these listed:

    CN North America NT 2017.20
    (1) ALL
    (2) Lower 49 States

CN North America NT 2017.20 3D
    (1) - US & Canada'

    CN North America NT 2017.10
    (1) ALL
    (2) Lower 49 States

CN North America NT 2017.10 3D
    (1) - US & Canada

    CN North America NT 2017.10
    (1) - US & Canada'
    (1) New Hampshire, Vermont

Shouldn't I have just the first two and none of the bottom three? How can I delete the stuff I don't need?

    Thanks,
    Ralph
  • You're correct, you don't need the bottom three. Now how you delete them can vary, so be careful what you do.

You'll need to look in the Garmin folder, both on the card and on your 755. Identify the two large .img files, one will be dated when you added the new map, the other one will be dated a while back and when you added the earlier map. Let us know what you've found in terms of where they are (device or card) and what they are called?

Here's the contents of the Garmin Internal folder:

With the multiple .img files in the internal, would you tell me the correct ones to delete, please? See any other files that don't need to be there?
