My Edge 500 is not recognised after update of GE

I experience a lot of trouble with the Garmin connect software lately. The latest is, that after upgrading Garmin connect did not remember the edge 500 (but the vivofit and the forerunner).
I tried to press "add device" to connect it again. Shortly, my Mac complained about me removing the USB connected edge 500 without terminating it first (which I did not do). Since then, my Mac does not recognise the edge
any longer, it does not show up in the "finder windows". Tried different cables, all work with other devices. I tried at a friends PC with the same result. What to do?

If the Edge 500 is not detected by two different computers, then the device has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. However, before doing so, you may want to confirm that your computer is not detecting the device. Have you tried the troubleshooting in our FAQ:

Garmin mass storage or MTP device not communicating with Garmin Mac applications

If so, and the device is not detected in any way, it will need to be replaced.

  • but it was working until the upgrade of GE

But strangely, the Edge worked fine until i upgraded GE. There the trouble started, GE showed only the other two devices which were installed before but "forgot" the Edge. The moment I clicked "add device" and let it look for the Edge the Mac complained about me disconnecting the Edge which I did not. From then on it was never found again. So the problem is somehow related to GE.
The link is useless, tried all these things already.
Please help I can absolutely not afford a new device.

The fact that Garmin Express was updated prior to this issue seems more coincidental or we would have hundreds of Mac users complaining of the same thing. Garmin Express does not control how a computer detects the device. If you connect the Edge 500 to a computer that does not have Garmin Express installed, what happens? Was/is Garmin Express installed on your friend's Windows computer? If not, then the device itself is unable to communicate to the computer that a mass-storage device was connected to a port. This could be an issue with the USB port on the device itself.

Does the device show it goes into mass-storage mode when connected or does it stay on the main screen? Unfortunately, the pins inside the port control different things and even if the device still charges, the data communication pin(s) could be damaged.

You may want to contact Product Support by phone to see if they can provide any further assistance.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my Edge 520 won't mount on Mac

    Hi Lisa,

I'm having exactly the same problem with my Edge 520. I pulled a brand ned 520 out of the box this morning - excited to get it setup and start using it on our weekly group ride tomorrow.

I installed Garmin Connect on my phone and Garmin Express on my OS X 10.9.5 MacBook Pro. I set up my Express account, configured user settings on the 520. Then I noticed that Garmin Express was installing a software update to the 520. Shortly after the update to version 6.20, the Mac complained about me disconnecting the Edge - which I did not do. From then on my Mac has never found the 520 again. So maybe the problem is related to the GE upgrade.

I went through the troubleshooting guide - used a cable from my camera that successfully mounts the camera, used the Garmin 520 cable successfully with the camera (to mount the camera on my Mac desktop), and I installed Express on my wife's computer and tried unsuccessfully to connect the 520 there. All attempts proved futile.

I have a brand new $399.00 paperweight and I'm really irritated!!

More details: Edge 520 not recognized by Garmin Express Mac

    I also tried the following:

From the Troubleshooting docs, I reset the 520, retaining user data. Didn't help. So I did a factory reset: Select Menu > Settings > System > Device Reset > Factory Reset > OK. Nope! Still didn't help. So I clicked tech support and I followed all of the steps in "What can I do if my fitness mass storage device is not being recognized by the computer?" Nothing. I'm done.

    The morning brings a solution

Faulty cable. Intermittent failure. Different cable solved the problem. I don't know what to make of the failure of the camera cable. But the problem is resolved. It was not a software issue.
