The service can either be stopped by clicking on the Black Triangle in the upper right hand corner of your Apple menu bar or by going into Activity Monitor and quitting the process. If there is no Black Triangle, try the Activity Monitor. The following steps are for El Capitan but should be similar to other Mac OS X versions:

    • Open Finder
    • Go to Applications
    • Go to Utilities
    • Double click on Activity Monitor
    • Highlight Garmin Express Service
    • Click on gray X icon on the upper left corner of the window to quit the process
    • Repeat for any other Garmin listings

Now see if Garmin Express will install. If not, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

Initial Launch of Garmin Express hung

Just installed GE on a new El Capitan MacBook. No issues with install process or device detection (Fenix 3) on USB. Account/Settings/Wi-Fi all green/checked. However, GE has now been sitting at "Please wait while we finish setting up your device" for about 20 minutes. Negligible CPU activity from GE or GE Service in Activity Monitor.

    Killing and re-launching was successful.
