GPSMAP 64st hang on power-up at the "Loading profiles..." screen

Brand new, just out-of-the-box 64st. I upgraded it to the latest firmware release (as of 5 days ago -- whatever that version was). Then I purchased a US West TOPO map from my.garmin.com. That's where the fun begins.

First -- horrid download process with a buggy browser plug-in. Tried on my Mac using Safari (repeated hangs at 1-3% progress, or just outright "download failed" messages). This is over a rock-solid 100Mb/s wired connection. Switch to a PC using IE. Download completed in just under an hour after lurching around a bit and occasionally showing nonsense progress bar percentages, like -18%. I looked at the file system on the 64st after the download finished, and the .img map file was only 140MB instead of the ~4GB it should have been. Booted the 64st just fine -- but (natch) there was no map on it to choose.

Deleted the 3 sketchy files off the device (.img, .unl, etc) and tried the download again a couple of days later on the Mac. Much better. ~20 minutes and got the "download complete." Looked at the map .img file on the device -- and it was the correct size.

Disconnected and powered up. Everything went normally until it hit the "Loading profiles..." screen. Then it just hangs there forever. Powering off the device looks normal (screen goes black), but something is hinky there too. It won't power on again unless the batteries have been removed.

Tried the delete user data reboot (PAGE-ENTER-POWER), erased my data. Same deal. Hangs at profiles screen.

Tried copying over the profiles to my Mac, then deleting them off the 64st. Still hangs. On boot, the 64st re-creates the "Recreational profile" file -- but none of the others. I suspect that's the corrupted one (it's the only profile that had a modification date newer than the others). All of the other profile files have the same date and timestamp and appear to have never been changed. It sounds to me like there's something corrupt in non-volatile memory (that recreational profile) that the 64st is trying to use and write to the file system.

Anyone else having this much fun, or know what the solution is? Not getting any traction with Garmin support on this.

I am sorry you are having trouble with your GPSMAP 64st freezing because of the profiles. It does sound like we need to reload them to the device. To do this, we need to set up remote assistance with your computer. This allows us to see what you see on the computer and move your mouse and keyboard, (You still have full control and can disconnect the session at any point.) With this, we can transfer the profiles to your computer and then device. Please call ">Product Support">Product Support so we can restore these profiles. (I believe this is also the cause of the device not starting again after powering off.)

Regarding the TOPO map download, most likely the reasons it was failing on the Mac are the Mac's internet setup or its sleep settings. Try the following if you need to download it (or another map) in the future:
    • If your Mac connects with WiFi (Airport), switch to a wired (Ethernet) connection. WiFi fluctuates more and if it drops connection for even a second then it may fail.
    • To check the sleep settings:
      • Click on the Apple in the top left of your screen and select the "System Preferences".
      • Click “Energy Saver”.
      • For the slider that says “Computer Sleep”, please slide the bar to the right to select “Never”.
      • Uncheck the box for “Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible”.

Let us know if you have further trouble.
