Garmin Express won't add Forerunner 305

Hi,

A few days back, I started facing problems in uploading my workouts to Garmin Connect. At the same time, Garmin Express also stopped working properly, it used to freeze after trying to sync my Forerunner 305 for a while. I decided to add the gps watch again in hope to resolve the problem. However, Garmin Express completely stopped working.

I visited this forum in order to find some help and found out the right way to reinstall Garmin Express. After carrying out the mentioned steps, Garmin Express works fine but it still can't add any device. It keeps looking for the device without any end.

I hope Garmin support could help me find a solution. Thanks.

Try verifying that your Mac actually detects that the Forerunner 305 is connected:

How do I verify a physical connection of a USB GPS device to a Mac?

If the device is not detected by the Mac, Garmin Express will not find it.

In addition to the troubleshooting in that FAQ, you should also try cleaning the contacts on the Forerunner 305 and the cradle. Instructions to do so are in this FAQ:

What can I do when my Forerunner or Edge will not power on or take a charge?

If still not detected, try another USB cable, another computer, etc. It may be that the device/cradle/cable is malfunctioning.

Call Product Support by phone for further assistance if this still does not resolve it.

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply. My Mac couldn't find the USB connected GPS device. However, when plugged in, the watch is able to charge and it functions perfectly during the runs.

I believe I need to change the USB cable. What would you recommend?

    Thanks,
    Ankush.

I am sorry you can't get your Mac to detect your Forerunner 305. First, make sure your have tried all the steps in the second FAQ Lisa provided you. Those steps can help make the connection work when it is failing.

If you have already done those steps, you might try connecting the device to another computer. This will tell you if it is a problem with the unit/cable or if the problem is with that computer's specific USB port. If it fails on both computers, then I would recommend trying a second cable. But if it works on the second computer, then it may be that USB port having trouble. Please tell us if it works on the second computer.

Let us know if you still have trouble.

  • Hi,

Firstly, I apologize for mixing up device model name. I realized that I rather have 310xt and not 305.

The device is working perfectly apart from being able to be recognized by the ANT+ stick. It also means I'm not able to upload my activities on Connect. Express software keeps giving a message that it reads ANT+ stick but not the device. Could you please tell me what could be the problem. Thanks and I apologize for wasting your time earlier.

Is the Forerunner 310XT already paired with Garmin Express? If not, try the troubleshooting in our FAQ:

Fitness device fails to pair in Garmin Express

If the device is already paired, the FAQ to use is:

Issues syncing ANT Fitness devices with Garmin Express

If neither of the FAQs resolve the sync issue, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

  • Thank you for the advice but as long as you don't fix Garmin Express, people will keep facing issues. It's such a terrible software which hangs every second time. I've reinstalled it multiple times (after following your suggestions on this forum) but to no resolve.

I can't believe that Garmin Express is so terribly bad when it's the only way we can use our GPS devices. Shame.

I am sorry that you are having trouble with Garmin Express. If Garmin Express hangs when you open it and you have tried the steps given, I have found that it is usually a problem with the user profile on the Mac. Try creating a new user profile on the Mac and run Express. If this solves the problem, you may be able to get some help from Apple on repairing the profile (most likely permissions) or you can import data into the new profile.

  • Hi Jason,

Thank you very much. Finally, I created a new profile on my Macbook and it worked. It's weird that Express stopped working in the first place but I'm happy that I can use the device again.

    Cheers,
    Ankush.
