Cant connect Edge 500 to my MacBook

I have a MacBook which I was using to upload my training data from my edge 500 to garmin connect and strava for the last 6 months with no issues. However, with the latest update for garmin express, it won't allow me to complete the installation because at the end it asks me to connect my device in order to complete the download. When I connect my edge 500 there is just a constant 'searching' icon. My garmin is charging when I connect it, so the cable is working, but garmin express won't recognise it. Ive tried it with another edge 500 and it doesn't work either and Ive also tried another cable.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can sort this problem because I haven't been able to upload or look at any of my training data for the last week.

All suggestions welcome

Many Thanks

I am sorry you can't get your Edge 500 to be detected by Garmin Express and I am happy to help. Changes in the Garmin Express program should not affect how the device is detected. An exception may be if part of Garmin Express isn't actually running anymore. Please verify that there is a black triangle at the top of the screen just to the left of the Mac's clock when you start the program. (This is the background service for Garmin Express.)

If the service is running, we need to check the device's connection. Please follow these steps:
    • Disconnect all other USB devices from the Mac except the mouse and keyboard.
    • Use the "GARMIN" brand USB data cable. Ours is actually labeled "GARMIN".
    • Make sure your device is plugged directly into the rear a desktop Mac or directly into the side of a laptop Mac.
    • If your Mac has "USB 2.0" ports and "USB 3.0" ports, please use the "USB 2.0" ports.
The device should show as a drive in "Finder". If it does not, try a different USB port. If it still doesn't, you will need to try a different computer.

If the device now shows as a drive and Garmin Express is running with the triangle at the top of the screen, please try the download again.

    Same issue

I have a Edge 500 with the latest firmware and Garmin Express just continuously searches. I have tried two different cables and two different MacBooks. I have confirmed that the cables work with another device.

If you tried the steps in this forum and the Edge 500 still isn't detected, then there is a problem with the physical connection, the device's memory is full, or there is corrupt data on the device. It isn't the device's firmware because that hasn't changed since August 2013. I also verified with an Edge 500 using Garmin Express version 4.1.18.0 that is does work 100% on the Mac. Please try the following:
    • With the Edge 500 connected to the Mac, open the "GARMIN" drive.
    • Open the "Garmin" folder.
    • Send these files to the Trash if they are here: GUPDATE.GCD, GarminDevice.xml.
    • Back up one folder and open "Activities".
    • Send all the already uploaded files to the Trash. Leave the ones here that still need to be uploaded.
    • Empty the Trash.
    • Eject the device from the Mac and then unplug it.
    • Power the device on but do not plug it in yet. It needs to load completely before it is plugged back in.
Now, please reconnect the device and see if the Mac and Garmin Express find it.

If the device still isn't detected, the cable you use is probably fine but the Mac may not be providing this device enough power. (Different models do have different power requirements.) In this case, you may want to find a powered USB hub and see if the Mac and Garmin Express can find the device.
