Just cannot connect Garmin (nüvi 2447 LMT) to Mac!

Hello: I have been using a Garmin nüvi 2447 LMT car GPS for the last two years. During this time, I have been using Garmin Express (current version 4.1.17.0) on my Macbook Pro (current OS X version El Capitan 10.11.3) to maintain the software and maps on the GPS unit.

All this time, I have been very frustrated with problems in connecting the GPS to the computer. The unit never mounts smoothly on the Mac. Sometimes, I have to leave it connected via USB all night and it will, if it pleases, show up on the computer in the morning.

Garmin user manual and web site has not been very useful. They suggest to ensure GPS battery is fully charged, Garmin Express is up-to-date, to try a different USB port on computer, restart computer, try another computer. While these instructions are not helpful at all, I have tried all of them.

This problem is so persistent that I am sure I am not the only one facing it. So: are there any users of Garmin nüvi 2447 LMT that are facing this issue? Has anybody found a solution to this problem? Thanks!

I am sorry your nuvi 2447LMT does not want to connect to your Mac and I am happy to help you with this. What you are describing is a problem with the physical connection to the computer. Please try these steps to help the issue:
    • This device uses "MTP" (Media Transfer Protocol) mode by default. When connected to a Mac, it switches to "Mass Storage" mode. We can set this device to already be in this mode since you are using a Mac:
      • Power on the device but leave it unplugged.
      • Select "Volume".
      • Press and hold the top-right corner of the screen. This will bring up a diagnostic menu.
      • Press on “Configurations and Settings”. (If you do not see this, go to the next step.)
      • Press on "MTP Settings".
      • Select "Mass Storage" and press "Save".
    • Plug your Mac into a wall power outlet.
    • Disconnect all other USB devices from the Mac except the mouse and keyboard.
    • Connect it directly to the rear of the Mac (side for a laptop) bypassing all USB hubs and devices.
      • Use only the Garmin brand USB cable. Our says "GARMIN" on it.
      • If your Mac has "USB 2.0" ports and "USB 3.0" ports, use the "USB 2.0" ports.

Now, the device should connect to the Mac. If you still have trouble, please contact ">Product Support">Product Support by phone or email for any additional troubleshooting of your issue.

Thanks for the reply to problem continues

    Thanks for your detailed reply.

Unfortunately, the problem persists. I set the GPS to Mass Storage mode and tried connecting it my Mac. Out of about ten attempts, I was successful in mounting the GPS only twice. This is an improvement, but I am still puzzled why the device does not connect every time.

This could be an issue with the USB port on the nuvi 2447LMT itself. I recommend contacting Product Support by phone and replacing the device.
