I am probably overlooking something basic.. how to you disable automatic syncing of activity data? In case you only want to do a software update of your device.
I would be happy to help you with this. That option is not available in Garmin Express. You could just setup Express so it will not run as a background service and not open automatically when a device is connected. Both options are available in the General settings referred to in the FAQ:

This will not stop Express from installing firmware updates and syncing with Connect when ever you intentionally open Garmin Express. It just stops Garmin Express from automatically doing these things when you connect the device to the computer. You could manually upload activities to Connect from mass storage devices and prevent automatic updates.
