Unable to download purchased map

I just purchased an eTrex Touch 35 for hiking in the U.A.E. but discovered the worldwide base map contains little more than an outline of the coast in this part of the world.

There are no topological maps available from Garmin for the U.A.E. so I reluctantly purchased Garmin nüMaps OnetimeTm City Navigator Middle East & Northern Africa NT so I at least have a few features to help navigate.

Since there is no Garmin linux software available, I switched to Windows 10 and tried to install the Garmin Communicator plugin for the Waterfox (64-bit Firefox) browser, but the plugin gets stuck in an endless loop after installation where it re-starts Waterfox and then proposes installing itself again. The Garmin Communicator plugin does not support Microsoft Edge (the default Windows 10 browser).

I finally tried using a Mac Mini and succeeded to install the Garmin Communicator plugin in the Safari browser. When I tried to download the map I had purchased, I was asked to install Garmin Express, which I did, but it did not download and install the map (and did not give any error messages).

The map I purchased has disappeared from MyGarmin so I'm stuck.

[email protected] has not replied to an email on the subject and does not supply a telephone number.

For the US$89.99 I paid (for a map I don't really want), I would have expected linux software and, failing that, Mac and Windows software that actually works.

Any help with downloading the map I bought would be much appreciated.
  • nuMaps Lifetime is an update for an existing CN map, so I'm afraid you've bought the wrong product. You will need to call Garmin Customer Support to explain your error, seek a refund and instead buy the map itself.
  • nuMaps Lifetime is an update for an existing CN map...

Thanks for the reply, but I didn't buy nuMaps Lifetime, I bought nuMaps Onetime - isn't that a one time download of a map?

..and how can I call garmin mena (Middle East and North Africa) if they do not provide a telephone number?
  • Same thing, nuMaps Lifetime or Onetime is a map update, not a map.

    For support see here http://www.garmin.com/us/support/contact

You may need to contact a local dealer http://www.garmin.com/us/dealerlocator or phone a number you can contact.
  • Hmm - it really wasn't obvious for me that it was an update - but anyway, the Garmin software for the Mac should have downloaded the update, but it didn't.

It looks as though the Garmin support site infers my location from the ip address as it is not possible to use the email contact facility for North America or Europe.
  • I'm going to move this to the Express forum as the Garmin team there may be able to help with refund etc.

I am sorry for the confusion. In order to use the Onetime Map Update you purchased the device would have to be preloaded with same map. I can remove the update from your myGarmin account and submit the credit. It will take some time to process the credit as it has to go from the US, to the UK. The UK office will apply the credit to the credit card. Usually you would be directed to contact the Garmin UK office for credits.

I have to admit that I do not know what options you have in Dubai but I suggest you use the link below and view the coverage area for that map. It may be what you are looking for. I do not recommend you purchase it from that page as it is the US page. Purchase the microSD card from an authorized Garmin dealer online or a local brick and mortar store.

Again, I am sorry for the troubles.

Thank you for the offer, please go ahead and credit my card.

I checked my order again and, as far as I can see, the word "update" is not mentioned anywhere - perhaps you could arrange for the description to be modified so that others do not make the same mistake as I did.

I'm not sure what to do from here - the Garmin eTrex Touch 35 is no use for hiking in the U.A.E. as-is, at AED 500 (US$ 136) the City Navigator® Middle East & Northern Africa NT map is 50% of the cost of the device itself and will not help much with hiking anyway.

Google Maps has good topological detail for the U.A.E. - do Garmin have any plans to provide a decent hiking map in the near future?
  • You should be able to get free OSM mapping for your Etrex for hiking etc, that is what I use. Try here for starters

  • Thanks for the link - at least I can see the road to the start of tomorrow's hike now :)
  • That's almost two weeks now and I haven't seen any sign of the refund - any idea of the timing on this?

Despite a reminder, there's been no answer at all from [email protected] - is this a functioning address?
