Garmin Express stopped working with XT910 after El Capitan upgrade

Former Member
Former Member
I am not able to access my Forerunner any longer with the Garmin Express application
The device will not be found and deleting and reconnecting it does not work.

Ant stick is recognised but there is no way a connection will be established, because
after deleting it from the devices list, the XT910 is not found anymore. Neither with
the Ant stick and also not via usb cable which i tried as well.

Am I the only one? Damn.

What to do now?

I am sorry you are unable to pair your Forerunner 910XT with Express after updating to Mac OS 10.11. If the device isn't detected by the Mac, this can have a few different causes. Please use the FAQ What troubleshooting steps should I try if I am unable to pair my ANT fitness device to Garmin Express?

If you still have trouble, the device may be too full to create its GarminDevice.xml file. Please try deleting the already uploaded History from the unit and then restart it.

If you continue to have troubles please contact Garmin Product Support by phone.

    David,

I tried to follow the link because I am having a similar problem, but the link is leading to an error page. My iMac has El Capitan and my garmin 910xt refuses to download my latest workout information. In my case it is the fourth and fifth activities that it is not acknowledging. This has not happened before and I have been running El Capitan for at least a week.

The JSP Class error when clicking on links is typically caused by outdated or corrupted browser cached data. Try clearing your history and click the link again. Or you can Google the article title.

However, it sounds like your Forerunner 910XT is already paired. The FAQ you would need to refer to is What can I try when my ANT Fitness device will not sync with Garmin Express? (http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={600f3dd0-3e6a-11dd-d7af-000000000000}&kbName=garmin)

I would also check to see if those activities are actually making it to the Sync folder on your iMac. You can locate that folder using this FAQ: How do I remove FIT files that fail to sync in Garmin Express from my computer?
    http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={b2320530-05f0-11e4-eaba-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

If the files make it to the Sync folder, you can try to manually upload them (the file will need to be renamed to add a .fit extension in order to manually upload the file). If they give an error they are corrupted. You can check other forums here on how to correct .fit files. I recommend moving the files to the Desktop or some other more easily accessible location for the manual upload. Instructions on manually uploading can be found this this FAQ, however you would navigate to the file location on the iMac and not the device: How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect?
    http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={b16302a0-02ac-11de-515b-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

Once the files have been uploaded they should be deleted from the device.

If the files are not making it to the computer, there is no way to upload them. Have you tried clearing all the old history on the device, activities that have already been uploaded to Garmin Connect? I recommend keeping no more than 30 days or so of history on the device.

If you continue to experience problems uploading activities, it would be best to contact Product Support by phone for further assistance

I'm having the same problem with PC - Garmin Express

After i updated my Garmin Express program, I can't download any sport data from my Watch.
In fact, i've lost trainings in my watch, it looks like the watch deleted 1 month data from before.
Have tried all the answers yo give here,
please the problem is with the software Express i think.
Also, how can i recover the data that "get lost"?
    Thanks

I am sorry for the troubles. Garmin Express will not delete activities from the History menu on the 910XT after it syncs but old data on the watch that has already been uploaded should be deleted. The watch has a finite amount of memory and if it gets to full it can create corrupt files that Garmin Express and Connect cannot process. If the activity is not in the History menu on the watch it cannot be recovered. I suggest that you delete the 910XT from Garmin Express and Garmin Connect then add it back again. This will clear any corrupt files that might have made it to the computer but cannot be uploaded to Connect.

Again, I am sorry for the troubles.

    Via Vist

i Have already deleted and re installed Connect and still dind't work.
The olnly time i have deleted the memory was on other Connect update, about two years ago, and deleting all data didn't fix anything.
I'm not plannig to do the same,
So, where is all my data?
I lost 1 month of activities including a Race on the last weekend, the data is not on the watch, neither in the Connect page.
Please it's not the first time that this happened to me after an update of Connect, please you should chech this problems before releasing it.

I am sorry that you are having trouble syncing your Forerunner. As Curt stated, Garmin Express does not delete data off of the watch. If it doesn't show up when you look at the history on the watch then unfortunately it has either been deleted or the data is corrupt.

If the data still shows in the history on the watch but not Connect, it may just be marked as sent already. If this is the case you can resend the activities from the watch menu and Express should sync them.

    Data Missing

Well so, i've lost all September and October Activities.
    Great!

    Very disapointed with this software.
In 2012 when you make another Update for Connect, the same problem happened to me.

Please, test your software updates before releasing it, i don't wan't to be a guinea pig.

Is any fix planned for this bug?

I have forerunner 305 and after update to El Captain Mac stopped detecting the device. I am using 4.1.11.0 version.
  • mhaduk

If you have the Forerunner 305 already added to Garmin Express but Express cannot detect it to sync after the upgrade delete the device from Express then add it back again. If your trying to add the device to Express and it cannot detect it please use the article below to determine if the device is present in the System Information.

    How do I verify a physical connection of a USB GPS device to a Mac?https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={77a3a150-4ad7-11de-f35c-000000000000}

You can also use the Garmin WebUpdater to detect and update the firmware on the Forerunner 305. There are no known issues with El Capitan and the Forerunner 305 communicating.
