Garmin Express doesn't recognize Garmin S6 after upgrade MAC 10.11 El Capitan

Hello,

I am a Mac User. My Garmin S6 was working fine with Garmin Express while running 10.10 from Mac. Then decided to upgrade to 10.11. Now my Garmin Express doesn't recognize it anymore but the dock is still charging the watch..

I have uninstalled / reinstalled the application, no changes. Then changed USB port nothing occurs. Then deleted in my profile my watch in Garmin Express. My watch was found but for few seconds later pop up from mac stating can't read the watch as a disk..

Any clues?

Regis
  • Using WebUpdater following the procedure described before- keeping the counting button pressed to start the loader of the S6 - I succeeded after several failures to load the version 3.30 in the S6. Now it works.

So how did you do your update? I'm clueless.
  • Since the Approach is essentially a mass storage device it connects or mounts as a drive to most operating systems just like a USB Flash drive would. After an unexpected change in the way the Mac OS handles the mounting of the external drive, Garmin has released a firmware update that will correct the issue. Since the Mac OS X 10.11 will not mount the Approach S5 and S6, a second computer running a previous MAC OS X version, back to 10.4 can use the Garmin WebUpdater to install the update on the Approach. A PC running XP Service Pack 2 or newer can also be used will Garmin WebUpdater. If the PC is running Vista Service Pack 2 or newer Garmin Express can install the update.

The Garmin WebUpdater is an older application that will run on the operating systems mentioned above and can be used to download and install the update. It is small in size and quick to install but if finding a second computer to use for a few minutes is simply not a possibility for Mac OS X 10.11 users then the process below can be used to force Garmin WebUpdater to see the device. It will not mount in Finder as normal but if the steps are followed correctly, the Garmin WebUpdater will be able to communicate with the device and install the update.

    1. Ensure device battery is fully charged
    2. Disconnect device from computer
    3. Power device off
    4. Download, install, and open Garmin WebUpdater
    5. Proceed to Find Device screen
    6. Press and hold MEASURE button for Approach S5/S6:
    7. Plug device into computer
    8. It may take up to 30 seconds before the device is recognized.
    9. Click Try Again in WebUpdater
    10. Release the Measure button
    11. WebUpdater should offer the firmware update
    12. Click Install

After completing the update, disconnect the device and verify the software is up to date. Scroll down to the About menu and check that the S.W. is 2.30 for the Approach S5 and 3.30 for the Approach S6. The device should now connect to the Mac as before the El Capitan update.

If you continue to have troubles please contact Garmin Product Support by phone so the issue can be thoroughly investigated.

  • Thanks for update

Thanks for the update; it worked for me.
I updated the S6 firmware with an old PC using webupdate and then everything went right on the mac.

    Still issues

Garmin just released a software update to resolve this issue.

    Versions:

    Approach S5 - 2.30
    Approach S6 - 3.30

Garmin Express and WebUpdater will offer these updates. Because the devices do not physically mount on 10.11 El Capitan, the update will need to be performed on a Mac running an OS X older than 10.11 (10.10 or older) or on a Windows PC.

It may take some time for the update to populate to all our servers so if it is not available at first, please try again later.

    Lisa

I have installed 3.30, restarted the watch and have the latest version of express. The watch is now "found" and can be seen as an external drive in finder. There is still no connection between express and the watch though.

The Approach S5, S6 is the only device confirmed to have an issue communicating correctly with El Capitan. This effects every S5, and S6 because it was a fundamental issue with the firmware. There are no other Garmin devices that would apply to this issue. Any other device would have to go through completely separate trouble shooting by Garmin Product Support. Depending on what type of device it is you should start with one of the FAQ's below. If a solution was not found in either article Garmin Product Support should be contacted by phone so it can be thoroughly investigated.
