No standalone map lifetime updates?

I bought the Europe NT map for $99 about a year ago, and noticed lately it's been inaccurate on a few occasions, so I went in to update the maps today to find that I'll have to pay another $99 for an update. Is Garmin stuck in the 1990s? There's no way I'm going to pay $99 every year to keep my maps up to date. I bought my 2597LMT in the US last year and planned to buy the Europe maps when I returned back to traveling in Europe, which I did. Now I'm back in Europe and find my maps are outdated. How can Garmin compete with smartphone GPS users when their maps have so little value? Why do I have to purchase a whole new device at the same price as a map purchase in order to get lifetime updates? When a map is purchased, it's tied to a device and can't be transferred to another, so why doesn't it include lifetime updates? Makes no sense. It's wasteful and artificially constrained.

I'm definitely not going to play this game. I'll happily go buy a TOmTom or just use my iPhone.
  • That's exactly what I remember the website looking like a year ago. And if it's hard to find now, it's fair to say it was hard to find then. "Clearly" must be a better of opinion.

Here's the page from back when you bought your map, see if you feel its clear or not.

It's linked to on the main page under 'Which format is right for me'

So I should have looked in the FAQ to find out that my purchase didn't include updates? It's as clear on the product page as it was a year ago. Why is does same map on DVD include updates when the download does not. Isn't it clear that this is intentionally misleading?

How would Garmin know that people are complaining about this when posts to the forum are being censored?

You're not reading what I wrote. Yes it's a FAQ but it's linked to on the page where you buy maps under a link entitled 'Which format is right for me'.

As for DVDs being updateable but the other 2 methods not that is just the way it was when you purchased your map. It's unfortunate you didn't click on that link and read it prior to purchase but you can't really blame Garmin for that.

Why you think your posts are being censored in any way I don't know, if you look throughout the forum you'll see many negative posts.

Well where is my post then? I tried posting three times yesterday and it said every time that a moderator will review it. They still aren't showing. If that's not censorship I don't know what is.

Also, why do I have to enter the captcha everytime I post? And why am I showing as "unregistered" when I've been registered for over a year?

No, it wasn't that way when I purchased the download. It was exactly the way it is now. And as for having to click an FAQ link in order to find out that only one out of the three purchase methods includes updates, how is that "clearly marked" and how is that not trickery?
  • I've checked and there are no posts of yours awaiting moderation.

As for the captcha, that is a Garmin decision to help to prevent spam.

For the fact you're showing as unregistered see here:

All I can say is your mistaken, the new page that you see now is dated 18th of this month, prior to that it was as per the link I pointed you at. You can see that from this page taken from Wayback Machine dated 8th of this month, 10 days earlier.

No, I meant the product page was the same a year ago as it is now, and nowhere on that page does it state that updates are not included with the download. You're saying I have to click on an obscure link to find out that only one out of the three purchase methods includes updates. How is that "clearly marked" and how is that not trickery? It's pretty much standard industry practice that maps include updates.

btw it seems that whenever I try to post via the quote button, my posts are sent for moderation and they never show up. There's something wrong with these forums.

The Username which allows you log into our websites (Garmin Connect, Forums, & myGarmin) cannot be changed. You can change your Display Name within Garmin Connect. Changing your Display Name affects how other Garmin Connect and Forum users see your name.
    To change your Display Name:
    Sign into Garmin Connect
If in Garmin Connect modern, click the User icon (Silhouette) on the left. If you are in Garmin Connect classic, click your Display Name in the top right
    Click Settings
Click Connect Profile on the left
    Update your Display Name
    Click Save at the bottom
Your Display Name has now been successfully updated in your account.

I already did that. These forums are a complete mess.

Really, it's hardly an obscure link. It's on the map purchase page and was titled 'Which format is right for me'.
