I have a Nuvi (250, I think) that I bought about 6 years ago. I am travlling to Croatia in a few days, and so purchased the Europe NT map package for $103 CAD. I looked at the description page first, and it said Croatia was included. Well, non-refundable purchase made, tried to load it on the SD card (not enough space on main) with the Express interface, then tried with the old interface after that. Both times, it appeare to load, but when I try to change country to Croatia on the nuvi, to look for an address in Croatia, it claims no matches found. So, did I load wrong, or did I just get ripped off?
You weren't ripped off, it does indeed include Croatia. If you're not seeing it you either haven't downloaded the correct map or something else is wrong. What's important to know is which nuvi you have as some cannot accept maps larger than 2Gb, and the full EU map is over 3Gb.
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, I appreciate someone who knows these things!
I am using the garmin express to view this nav. It is a nuvi 250w, software version 7.80. It is currently reading 1.4GB free. I do have an SD card installed in it, and hoped that would give me enough storage to load whatever map I wanted. But if the Device Storage bar does indeed read both the main memory and the SD card, then this makes a lot more sense. However, I don't think this is the case.
When I have the nuvi hooked up to the computer, and attempt to load the Europe NT map, I see that the main memory has 1431 MB, and prompts a red letter alert of Insufficient Space. Clicking on the "more options" brings up the SD card reading 5956 MB available. Using the radio button next to the options, I can select the SD card to save the download to. It appears to work, and if I attempt to download again, I get a message box telling me I have a file with that name already in that place. All very well and good, but Croatia does not come up on the nav when I try to change country.
So, am I not able to use maps that are stored on the SD card? Or am I missing something else?
You're correct that your nuvi doesn't use both internal memory and the card and split the map across the two.
If the map has downloaded and yet isn't showing on your nuvi there are a few things to check. Is the map selected and does in show when you look under Tools, Settings, Map, MapInfo (may vary slightly on your model)?
If not then your nuvi isn't seeing it. Check your SD card is formatted FAT32. If not format it FAT 32 and try again.
Edit: If your nuvi does show the EU map is selected you may have to deselect your US map to enable you to enter details on Croatia
Interesting. When I look under map info, I see that a checkbox is checked beside CN North America NT. When I remove the SD card, it pops up the message "No detailed maps found that support routing. Nuvi cannot be used without them." Pop the SD card back in, and the checked off North America NT listing reappears. There is no other choices listed. From this I presume the SD card is indeed working, and the nav can read info off the card. Is this a reasonable impression? As an aside, the SD card is an 8GB, so I sure hope that would be enough room!
Thank you again for sharing your greater knowledge.
The City Navigator North America NT 2013.40 maps on the SD card are from of your last map update in Feb of 2013. There should be three files named gmapsup1 inside the Garmin folder on the SD card. I recommend a separate card but since there is enough free space the Europe maps will download into the Garmin folder as well. The Europe NT 2016.10 map consists of three files called gmapsupp. Please see the FAQ:

I am now concerned that I have made an error in the way I am going about this. Allow me to try your patience with a play by play of my process. Perhaps you can spot the error or the reason I cannot seem to find Croatia on my nav?
My tools: one macbook pro equipped with USB port. One ipad, annoyingly free of USB port (the device I am using to type, so as not to affect the download, and to allow step by step documentation) One Garmin nuvi, and the nuvi to usb cord. Also a cup of tea.
All right, after reading the linked support article, I have chosen safari, and cleared the cache. I have downloaded the garmin express, about 4 days ago. I have plugged in the nuvi to the computer. The express window informs me that express is up to date, having just checked. I have navigated to my garmin on the safari browser. I have chosen my Maps. I see city navigator Europe NT. I have chosen download now below it. Device found, insufficient space. More options, select the SD card for download. A file with the same name already exists. What the heck, let's replace that existing file! "Carefully read" the agreement, accept agreement.... the download starts.
About twenty minutes estimated time to completion. This is different than my previous attempts. I feel a faint stirring of hope. The downloader does appear to exist in a time warp, leaping from 20 min estimated time remaining to 1, then back to 17 min... and now all the way up to 57 min!
My hope dies a swift death when the message "do not disconnect" turns to "connection failed". That is pretty odd, as both ends of the usb are still plugged in. I checked them anyways, just in case. Still firmly plugged in. The progress bar is still creeping up, gaining one percent in the 2 min I have been watching with concern after the connection failed message.
The wifi is reading strong and connected when I check into it on the macbook pro. And the progress bar is still slowly gaining. I must admit I am puzzled and concerned. But the progress bar is still creeping up, ever so slowly.
After about 25 min of waiting and at 77% completed, the "connection failed" message became "bad gateway" then swiftly changed to "method with the requested number of arguments not found (session may have timed out)". Well, I know its taking a long time, but I'm not sure what I can do about that, other than make sure the macbook does not go to sleep.
I waited another 2 minutes, watching the progress bar... but it was dead. Sigh. What to do now? I suppose I will try again.
Thanks for the further info. I chose safari, cleared the cache, and tried to download to the sd card. after about 35 min, it timed out. I will try again.
It worked! Clearing the cache and trying to download again worked. Thank you very much Curt, that was just the information I needed. And timely as well, as I leave tomorrow morning.
