Garmin Express Won't Sync with Garmin Connect

Former Member
Former Member
I have recently been forced to setup a Garmin Connect account to continue using my watches with my preferred online tracker.

I have installed Garmin Express and although it recognises both devices and seems to be able to connect the device with the Connect account, I get the same error when connecting either device.

"Sorry, we couldn't sync your device, please try again"

So I searched the internet found this forum, thought great I'll find an answer here and so far I've tried....

I have tried, running Express in the background and letting detect and attempt to sync
I have tried opening Express first before connecting my device
I have tried removing and re-adding the device.
I have tried deleting all but the last months history from the device.

Nothing as yet seems to work.

Devices are Forerunners 205 and 305, PC is running a clean (1 month old) install of Windows 8.1

How do I get the thing to work?

    Experiencing the same problem

A week ago I installed Garmin Express on a windows 8.1 clean install and it worked fine for a few days, but since yesterday I get the same message (italian translation of "Sorry, we couldn't sync your device, please try again") and don't find new data in Garmin connect. At the same time I get a "transfer completed" message on my FR405 device and from that moment it never tries again to do any sychronization until I add a new activity on my device.
I also tried to load data manually using tcx files I found in "C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\3735290781\Sync\FitnessHistory" but I get the error "Si è verificato un errore durante il caricamento. Riprovare." that in english should be something like "An error occurred while loading data. Please try again".
I can send logs if necessary. Please let me know what I should do to solve the problem.

Please see the FAQ: What can I try when my ANT Fitness device will not sync with Garmin Express?

Delete the devices from Express and Connect then delete any activities from the watches that are already uploaded to Garmin Connect or are older than 30 days. Once complete, add them back to Express.

How do I delete a fitness device from Garmin Express?

If you continue to have troubles please contact Garmin Product Support by phone.

Hi Curt, as I'd said in my original post, I'd done both those elements already. However I've just repeated them again, and no change, still doesn't work.

Struggle to phone Monday-Friday during the hours offered as I'm at work, and won't have either the PC or a watch to hand.

The files that are transferred from those devices are saved on the computer. It is possible that corrupted data in this folder is causing the Sync error. While the files are not .fit files, the folder location is the same. You can rename the file and place a .tcx extension on the file and try to manually upload the activities. If successful, delete them from the device and the computer, then try a test activity and see if the sync occurs with no errors. For the manual upload, it may be easier to copy or move the files to the desktop in order to more easily locate them.

If that fails to resolve the issue, further troubleshooting will need to be done by phone. Support Hours in the US:

    Mon–Thurs: 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
    Fri: 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
    Central Time (Closed Holidays)

If you are not in the Central time zone, it may be necessary to call before work or you may be able to call in after if it is Monday - Thursday as the phone lines are open a little later.

    Garmin Express Sync Error

My bike ride from yesterday will not sync with Garmin Connect. I have a Garmin Edge 800 and I got an error message from Garmin Express. I cannot even upload it manually, however I was able to upload it to Strava. All previous rides sync'd fine. Could this be because of a corrupt Fit file.

The issue is most likely caused by corrupt data on the watches. If those older devices get full, the new activities start to overwrite the old activities and that can cause small pieces of corrupt data. I suggest you delete all but the last 30 days worth of activities from the History menu, then see if they will Sync. Next, use the WebUpdater to make sure the firmware on the devices is up to date. There hasn't been a firmware update for those devices in 6 years. The current version is 2.90. If no update is available you are looking at a master reset as a last resort.

    How do I perform a reset on my Forerunner 305, 205, 301, 201 or 101?

If that fails to resolve the issue, further troubleshooting will need to be done by phone. Support Hours in the US:

It does sound like the file is corrupted. Some websites are more lenient with corrupted data if the information that is bad is not needed to be displayed or used. I recommend checking the forum below for fit file repair.
