Garmin Nuvi 2798 LMTD - Updating maps loop

Hello,

I’ve just bought a new Garmin Nuvi 2798 LMTD, when I got it I updated the map and that was fine.
I added old locations using the geocoordinates and noticed the gps only had +- 150MB space free left.
Then I bought an 32GB Micro SD card from Sandisk and inserted it, connected it to my pc and using Garmin Express I selected reinstall maps.
Here I got the choice to choose between Install to SD Card or Select other options (since there wasn't much free space left on the internal memory).
So I selected the other options to see what other options there were.
To my surprise it started updating straight away and now keeps failing and tries to update it to 50% then keeps updating and loops again, after a while it finishes but I can’t get the option to install to SD card again…

Has anyone had the same problem?

So far I tried filling up the internal memory with more languages (optional updates using Garmin Express).
Now it has 100MB left but I still don't get the option to reinstall the map to the SD card...
  • Because its installing it to the device I suspect. Express will only place the map on the card if it needs extra space because the map you're loading is larger and there isn't sufficient space on the device.
  • Ok, so there's no clean way to make it save it to the SD card unless there would be a larger update?
I've also noticed people talking like this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?63395-How-to-move-map-from-Nuvi-40LM-to-SD-card.
They mentioned about overwriting the map on the gps with a smaller map, then fill the internal memory where it is too full for the full map to update.
Then run the update map and make it save to the sd card. But this is using the old utility "Map Updater", isn't there a supported way for the new Garmin Express?

And have you got any idea why the: "reinstall the map" loops at "Step 2/2 Updating maps"?
Since I thought maybe it was stopping because of insufficient space or something, but it does complete although it just loops a couple of times.
  • That method would work for Express also. But what I'm not clear on is why you're trying to do this.
  • Well when I first installed the map I had like 300-400MB of free space, after adding like +- 50 locations to the saved locations I noticed there was only 150-200MB free space left.
Since we're gonna use this GPS in Italy next week and my parents are fans of saving pretty much any location that was interesting I'd like to be sure to keep enough free space on the internal memory since it doesn't seem to be possible to let the GPS save to the SD card by default.. So that's why I figured if I could make it save the map on the SD card (I read somewhere the map was 2-3GB) I'd have plenty of spaces for years.

Btw how do you mean it's possible with Garmin Express?
I only got that message once when reinstalling the map but now even with 100MB of free space I don't get the choice anymore to install on the SD card...
  • Adding favourites or saved places takes up very little room. If you want to free up space delete all the unnecessary voice, text, keyboard, vehicle, help and EULA files.
  • Just to expand on what SUSSAMB said. Favorites are actually stored in a different part of memory than the memory that you are able to see when you plug the device in the computer. When you plug in the device, it does back up the favorites to the user accessible memory but like, SUSSAMB stated this is a very small amount of space (generally just a few MB at most).

I think that the 2798 comes with 8 G so I would have thought you would have several gig of free space. What have you been putting on the device other than maps?
  • It's indeed 8G but I've only got 500MB free space after cleaning up those languages I didn't need etc. The only map that was updated was Europe NTU 2016.10. Besides that I only saved +-50 locations using the geocoordinates.
  • 500Mb is ample space. I wouldn't worry that you'll somehow fill it up while using it.
